The keyboard is backlit white. I don't think you can get any other color. Not at least with that specific model.

Screens and keyboards have known problems. It's a hit or miss. And besides the real problems, you have a 50/50 chance of getting the AUO screen, which isnt as good as the LG. Plus its 1600 x 900. I would replace the screen if you get the AUO version, (you can put a 1920x1080 screen in it) and you'll want to throw in a better HDD.

So it's up to you. The refurb g73 has been at that price or lower for quite awhile now, so its not like its an amazing deal you have to buy now.

well guys as you can see i bought it, i ordered it a few days ago, unfortunately its the weekend so it'll be here monday, to bad it wasn't here yesterday or i'd have it for the weekend. oh well....

and you can change the backlight color, i guess they sell films to go over the white lights, but that requires disassemble, i hope to god i don't have to change the paste, or i am afraid i'll brick the laptop.

i7 Sandy Bridge Quad and a GT 540M with 17" screen at 1080p for ~$990

Customize as you see fit.
I've been looking between that and the G73 for a friend. My main concern though is that the 540m is worse than a 260m which is worse than a mobil 5870 which the G73 has. So for gaming, even with the better architecture won't the sager be worse?

Can you eventually swap that 540m for something better?

g73=/= 5160/5170.

The 5160/5170 are optimus based laptops, and you'd be an idiot to get the 5170, as the 17" display will kill the battery life benefits.

no you cannot swap out the 540m. It's soldered in.

The sager equivalent to the g73 is a 8170.
If you can live without the 17" screen, the 8130/50 is the way to go.
Also dont buy directly from sager, its more expensive and you'll get less support.

I know he wants a large screen, and that the battery life is less important. It's more of a portable desktop replacement than a laptop. He does some photo editing, and wants to be able to game with it. (Civ 5; CoD4; or whatever else we end up playing LAN). Hence the 17" screen.

I was trying to choose between the sager 5170 and the G73 because both were in the $800-1200 budget range.

It's a shame about the 540m; being able to have the sandy bridge and upgrade the GPU later if he actually needed to would have been awesome.
