I was trying to choose between the sager 5170 and the G73 because both were in the $800-1200 budget range.

It's a shame about the 540m; being able to have the sandy bridge and upgrade the GPU later if he actually needed to would have been awesome.
Between the two get the g73 hands down. the 540m will die to a 17 inch screen at 1920x1080. I'm not sure what version of the g73 he's looking at, but the screen can be replaced for a 1920x1080 res if he gets the lower res model.

He may want to do that anyways, as some of the g73 screens are quite poor, and photo editors can be quite picky about their screens >_>

Was looking at the ones from best buy; either refurbished or normal. Unless there is a better priced version out there. I do notice that these are the 1600x900 res not 1920x1080. Not sure where else to get them at the moment.

Watch ebay, I just passed up a BRAND NEW g73 for 1k
It came with wimax, was less then 30 days old, had the receipt, etc etc.

So if you can wait ebay has pretty good deals usually.

Also if he doesnt need a i7+5870 which it doesnt sound like he does unless he likes to play games on all high+high res, then he could get http://www.cowboom.com/product/675614 it's dual core but that wont limit him as the 260m+dual core are a good pairing, plus 400 less.. Hard to complain.
