ivy bridge system. - Page 2

Quick question. The 1366 socket is for the i7 950 correct? The 2500k uses the 1155 correct?

What about the 2600k? It's also the 1155 socket right? So seeing that the new Ivy Bridge socket will also be 1155 type socket, buying a 1366 is out of the question atm right? And even if I buy a 2500k, it's equivalent to the i7 950, but I can swap just the CPU down the road with a Ivy Bridge? Everything else (GPU/Ram/P67 Mobo) will work the same after the swap?

Yes to your last question as well. Don't get your hopes up for ALL processors to be compatible on 1155 though.

There will be IB quads available for 1155, however, the 6 - 8 core processors will most likely be exclusive to the 2011 platform, the successor to 1366.

2011 will have 8 DIMM slots vs 4 on 1155, and they will be Quad Channel vs Dual Channel.

If you're simply gaming, the 2500K is the best bang for buck atm, and until games start utilizing more than 4 threads, it will remain this way for a little while.

The 6 - 8 core processors will benefit from Multi-Threaded apps, rendering, encoding that sort of work.

With Nehalem in your system, you got a reason to skip Sandy Bridge and Ivy Bridge.
I will skip both and targeting Haswell.
Nehalem is enough to handle the best GPU and I believe many people here build high-end computer mainly for gaming.

Knowing Intel there will be some kind of snafu when you try to upgrade from SB to IB on the same socket.

They'll probably throw a new chipset on there or something and make it so you can only use IB with a 1155 IB board. -___-

I'll keep my 1366 for now.

What is wrong with the 1366 rig you have now? I don't understand why people want to upgrade every time their is something new. I mean your system is really good. You could maybe use a new video card, but your rig still kicks ass.

Thanks a lot for the help. So I guess in layman's terms, If I want the 6-8 Ivy Core that will be a big upgrade, I will have to get a whole new setup (Ram/Mobo/CPU) down the road. So there is going to be an Ivy Quad Core also?

So just like the 775, there was up to quad core, the 1366, there was Quad and Six Core, and now with Ivy, there will be Quad, Six, and Octo Core CPU's? But the chance the Six/Octo being fitted in the 1155 is very slim, and on top of that, the chances of it being $300 range, is even slimmer?
