Is world of warcraft good? - Page 2

I played it to level 8, found it to be excruciatingly boring.

KG I agree along with the others who stated the first few lvls are terribly boring. I played for about 2 yrs. I was lucky enough to have my brother to play with the whole time. We're going to start playing Rift though. He seems to like it and I want to play something else! lol! It can deff. keep you entertained if you get high enough lvl'd up. Keep in mind though that they really made lvling easy now. So the first 20 lvls or so won't seem to kill you slowly. Just grab a friend that plays (surly you know someone who plays) and tell them you want to start playing and to lvl a toon with you untill you feel like you can play and do stuff on your own.

My take on world of warcraft is this. It is a huge time sink. You have to get to max level, grind out gear (pvp is grinding honor, heriocs are fun the first run then grinding out get and points to get gear after), grind out professions, then use that gear to grind arenas or raids. Again first time through everything is fun and exciting, it loses it novelty fairly quickly.

They keep people hooked through a couple of things. First they give just enough gear to keep you coming back. They make it so it is trickled to you, note i am not talking about blue gear. This give you a sense of accomplishment in the form of a small treat (Think your pet and using treats to promote favorable behavior. Eventually the pet will do it without you having to give a treat.).

Second, they keep you hooked with the large social aspect of the game. People can get this outside the game with a bit of initiative, but it opens an anonymous channel for people to express themselves without giving out their name (Think an interactive forum to which it provides you entertainment as you socialize.)

As far as the addictive qualities of the game, they are definitely present, and i gave you two main reasons people get hooked. For myself i used to play and was drawn into the game as well wasting massive amounts of time on it. For reference i have never been addicted to anything prior to World of Warcraft. Was the first time i had to actively get myself to stop playing something and not fall back into it. This is not to say that you yourself will have this issue, but World of Warcraft is unfortunately setup in such a way that the more time you spend within the game the better your character will be. In sense of knowing your class and others, be it for pvp or for pve.

Just some thoughts on my part.

If you are not concerned with any of this the game is actually well done. I have to argue though that from what i have seen they have watered down their lore quite a bit, which in my opinion the story was the best part of the game.
