Single vs Dual Channel?

So, is there a large difference between Single and Dual channel? I'm running extremely RAM/CPU heavy Java algorithmic strings, 24/7 @ 100% CPU (1090T@4.0GHZ) and 5GB Ram usage constantly.

Wondering if 3x2GB would be much different to 2x4GB/4x2GB if I'm only using 5GB of RAM?

Dual channel is better because it accesses 2 sticks of RAM as 1. Think of it like RAID for your RAM. Unless your motherboard supports triple channel (which yours doesn't), your RAM will be faster if you keep it in dual channel vs only having 3 sticks which are not running in dual channel.

you will significantly lower your memory bandwitch by running sigle channel with odd number of sticks

Especially with a RAM intensive program, you will not only experience a significant slowdown there but you will experience significant noticeable slowdowns all around. Boot time, even light apps such as web browsing.

Think of it like striping in a RAID setup. The data gets striped between the modules so that theoretically access/transfer times are faster. And they actually are, but by how much is a different story. When Dual Channel was all the rage back then Tomshardware did a benchmark and showed only a 5% improvement on their benchmarks. Granted that it's 4 years old by now so scaling of the memory has probably improved. I would personally not hesitate to get a dual channel setup since either way you're getting a performance gain even if it's minimal.

does this mean there is a negligible difference between a 2x 4Gig setup and a 4x 2Gig setup using equivalent memory?

2x4GB and 4x2GB are both dual channel
Performance will depend on the RAM kit/capability, most 2GB DIMMs OC better than 4GB DIMMs
