VMs and ESXi

Okay, I got a question. I have a file server setup and i was interested in setting up a pfsense/smoothwall etc machine. Is it safe to run pfsense VMed along with my file server VMed in ESXi or Proxmox (or something along those lines, Ive seen some people talking about VMing them in ESXi with no prob just wasn't sure if it would be safe.)? I wasn't sure, the only thing I could find is people suggesting not to VM pfsense with your file server as the host OS for the VM.

Edit: I must be blind I just stumbled upon TurboTurtles thread (http://www.overclock.net/servers/935...e-host-os.html) which is pretty much the same question. So I'm assuming it would be perfectly safe?

Yup, no problems.

Saves on hardware (1 server vs 2), makes backing up PFsense easy (backup the whole VM), and is how I ran servers for my senior project. I ran triple gigabit NIC's, 2 for the firewall (pf sense in your case), and 1 for the file server.

Doing this made protecting the entire network pretty easy so my network looked like this:

WAN-RJ45- > Firewall/router in -> firewall and router out -RJ45-> Linksys dumb switch

From there the switch connects the rest of the network including the file server.
