P67 boards and PCI-E lanes?

I had read elsewhere that some motherboards will switch their PCI-E lanes, if they run in x16/x4 mode normally, to x8/x8 if you have a crossfire/SLI setup. Is this true? If so, which boards will/won't? I know the boards aren't out now, but I think we can assume that most of the boards that were out before the recall will be out with updated revisions when they come back.

I know the difference isn't much, but if two boards are the same price and one will run x8/x8 and the other does x16/x4, then I would probably rather pick the x8/x8 since I saw several test runs showing that x8 shows little or no performance hit, but x4 generally showed a few FPS difference in most games. It's not much, but if it's the same price and I get a few FPS, I might as well get the few extra FPS. Most of the boards that I saw that ran x16/x8 or x16/x16 were over my budget.

tl;dr: Which boards, if any, that claim x16/x4 PCI-E lanes can switch to x8/x8?

well here is the thing on every P67 board there are ONLY 16x PCI-E lanes without an extra NF200 or Hydra bridge chip to increase that number. you want a board that can run 8x,8x in SLI, boards that say 16x/4x won't allow you to run one card at 16x and the other at 4x.

I guess you didn't read much of my post, did you? Haha. I know that I would rather have x8/x8, but I was wondering which boards will do x8/x8. I know some boards (like the Biostar I had previously picked out) showed x8/x8 while most other cheaper boards ran x16/x4. But I had heard that some boards were capable of switching from x16/x4 to x8/x8 when you use 2 GPUs. I was wondering if that's true, and which boards (if any) do that.

The bridge chips don't increase the no of lanes they merely "split" the existing lanes so to speak. The lanes still have to travel from the bridge chip to the cpu which will be along the original no of lanes.

All boards that don't have nf200 chips do 8x/8x in sli/crossfire on a p67.

Ok, so any P67 board, even if it specifies x16/x4 in the specs, will be able to switch to x8/x8? Fantastic.

If anyone has any proof showing otherwise (or any proof confirming this), I'd still like to hear it just to be sure.

Proof is intel spec sheet. THOUGH what can also happen is USB 3 might take up some of that...Im not 100% sure.

Gotcha. Cool. I don't have any USB 3.0 devices as of now anyway, but I had also heard that before. But I was unsure if that was only through the use of add-on cards taking up a PCI-E slot or if that included the USB 3.0 ports built into the motherboard.

If you want 8x8 you need a board that clearly states it will run 8x8. My board runs 16x4. You can't do SLI on 16x4 but you can do crossfire on it.

Thanks to P67's having full speed PCI-E on the x4 slot, 8x8 vs 16x4 on P67 doesn't matter. I got the same performance either way, so I exchanged my 8x8 board for a 16x4 to save a few bucks.

16x4 on P55 sucked balls. I remember reading somewhere that 16x4 on P67 was faster than 8x8 on P55.
