Alternative to Microsoft Security Essentials

Thread Starter
Hey everyone,
I am looking for a free alternative to MSE to block viruses and malware for Windows 7. Something that consumes the least amount of resources running in the background would be best, as I tend to use my PC for gaming.
Thanks!

If you don't like/want MSE, I've heard AVG gets the job done just as well, if not better!

http://free.avg.com/us-en/homepage

Any reason why you don't like MSE? I'm using MSE 2.0 and I LOVE it!... but maybe that's because I'm naive...

AVG is far from light on system resources and is down right annoying with it's nagging and required amount of user input. To be honest MSE is the most user-friendly and gamer-friendly AV I have ever used.

If I weren't to use MSE I would most likely use Avast or Avira.
AVG isn't very good anymore. MSE is probably the best choice otherwise Avira is fantastic.
It's not slow...

Don't mean to accuse anyone of anything, but the most common reason for not being able to use MSE is because the copy of Windows isn't genuine.

lol I hadn't even considered that.

You'll get Lots of different answers here smile.gif Its all down to personal preference.
My preference and 10 years of experience say Avast.
Other will disagree, BUT
Probably any of the big free AVs- Avast, AVG and so on, will do the job jsut fine wink.gif Try them and see which you like more.

Don't bother to read competitive tests. The results change by the week.

Cheers!

Avira, MSE, Avast, or Panda Cloud. AVG sucks now. That's just my personal opinion.

MSE gets bugged on some systems. Starts reading HDD like insane and nothing fixes it, not even reinstall. Just a possible reason smile.gif
