Cleaning Blackwidow?

Thread Starter
Spilled Pepsi on my Blackwidow, at first it died, but it has returned from the grave. Cue holy chorus.

Anyway, since it sprung back to life, LED's and all, some of the keys are gunked up with Pepsi.

What's the best thing to use to clean the switches with?

I'm not going to bother with disassembling each gunky switch to the bone but, if there was something I could do simply by taking each keycap off that would be best.

I have some isopropyl at hand, and some cotton Qtips, should I just go ahead with that?

Dunno if this will help, but to anyone who's interested here's the keys which are borked:

Context menu key (The one left of Right ctrl)
Right Shift

Del (next to end not backspace)

Num7
Num8
Num9
Num4
Num6
Num+
Num1
Num0
Num.

Dpad Down
Dpad Right

Any/all input appreciated,

Electronics are extremely sensitive to liquids.

the fact that it died is one thing.

the fact that you put power to it before cleaning it is very bad.

those things fry almost instantly.

You can go at it cleaning every bit of corrosion or gunk you see but its likely a goner at this point.

electronics corrode/rust very fast, and almost instantaneously when given power, not to mention short out and cook.

so if you spilled on it, and didn't tend to it promptly then the chance of a full recovery is doubtful and there is likely more issues than what you are experiencing atm, normally they pop up at random and intermittently.

Right, for one, I spilled juice on it when it wasn't powered.

Funny you say that now because isopropyl is working pretty well.

It's working fine, types fine on all of the keys other than said few.

Got an RMA lined up, if my cleaning fails I'll just get another.

Any actual help? Please?

RMAing after a Pepsi spill is kinda tacky IMHO.

Coke spill would have been OK.

that was actual help, I repaired electronics for a living for multiple years.

first you said its pepsi, now you say its juice, frankly it doesn't matter if you jizzed on it its all about the same.

You didn't spill juice on it while it was on... I don't care, you already stated you put power to the device, otherwise you wouldn't know what buttons worked and what didn't and that the LED's were working, all that matters is that you powered the device before attempting to clean it.

I already told you to clean it the way you are doing, there isn't any other way to clean it... PCB's are touchy things and once two things make contact with power that aren't supposed to they normally stop working or short out.

and quite frankly I hope your RMA is denied, as it is not something that should be RMA'ed and only drives up costs for everyone else.

take responsibility for your f up and try to clean it, if it doesn't fix it, go buy a new one.

Rubbing alcohol should work, or just soap and water, just do it at night before bed, so it has time to dry over night. Water + Electronics is fine, as long as there's no power.

not 100% true, water still cause's things to oxidize

use high % Isopropyl probably the best thing thats readily available.

and soap will leave a residue behind.
