RAID 5 Keeps rebuilding

Thread Starter
Hey guys,

I have been playing and tweaking some settings on my new pc for some time now and have noticed that i seem to have an issue with my RAID from time to time.

I originally thought it was due to FileZilla doing an auto shutdown, but when i was using my PC this morning downloading some files i got a pop-up from the Intel Storage Console states it was missing a hard drive (listed all 3 drives with one of the 3 marked as missing)

The program locked up as it was "Searching" for the drive and it found it (good i guess) but it started re building the RAID again (Cant be that bad i guess apart from the bad drive read during the re-build)

I just wanted to get some opinions if the drive may be dead/dieing or if anyone knows how to test a single drive that’s running in a RAID config.

Or am i best to blow away the RAID test each drive again and start it up again and re transfer everything?

Attached is the copy of the HDD which went "missing"

All drives were brought at the same time and are Seagate 1TB 7.2k

Is it the same drive that keeps dropping out, or different ones at random?
Do you have a SMART report for each drive?

Were you downloading to the RAID? If so, then I suspect that one of the drives hit a bad sector and was trying to write to it. The drive didn't respond to the controller in time and the controller dropped the drive from the array, thinking it was dead.

Seagate drives use a mechanism called ERC, which limits the time taken by the drive to write to a sector. Luckily Seagate, unlike Western Digital, allows this to be set on their desktop class drives. There should be a utility to allow you to do this.

Another thing to look at are the SMART values, to see if you have any Uncorrectable Sectors or Seek Errors. That will indicate if the drive is failing.

I have never actually been using the PC while it has happened before. Just when i start the PC up i catch it on the boot screen as REBUILD when it loads the Raid drives.

SMART reports are done on software like SEA Tools yeah? If so then no, i dont know what i was thinking when i got all new drives, made the raid and went to town on it..

Yes i was downloaidng to the RAID (which is getting full less than 50GB space, so its not like i havent been using it)

Is it possible to change the values on the deives while in RAID? Or view the SMART on the drives while in a RAID setup?

Yes, you should be able to get SMART reports from the drives, while they are in the array. The Intel RST application software should permit this. If not, a drive benching tool (HD Tune, HD Tach, ATTO etc) should let you see the SMART values.

Also double check you don't have loose connections...

Just connected to my pc and same drive again dropped off the PC....

Same issue, marked as missing, this time while i wasnt downloading to it...

GOing to check the SMART as you said when i get home, also just check if the connections are all ok...

WOuld not be a sata cable issue would it?

Also i have HD Tune installed but cant seem to pull any info regarding the RAID just the std error checking etc.

Almost 10min and drive has not been found again frown.gif

Well theres a constant scrapping sound from the HDD which kept dropping off...

Sounds like an RMA is required...

Is running on a 1 short HDD in Raid ok for like a day or so?
