Water on Laptop - way to salvage Hard drive?

Thread Starter
So one of my friends spilled water on her laptop a few hours ago, from the way she described it I'm gonna assume it was pretty bad. She's working on drying it out and getting rid of moisture at the moment. she also removed the battery right now.

However, if it does not turn back on when she tries tomorrow morning, is there a way to salvage the information on her laptop's hard drive?
If theres a way I could do so let me know, we'd greatly appreciate it biggrin.gif We do have externals on hand for backingup purposes too. Thanks!

Best bet is to just try to take it out and see if it will still run in a different rig?

After making sure its completely dry that is.

remove the harddrive from the laptop and get a IDE/SATA to USB Adapter, like this one.

If the harddrive functions then it should be easy to transfer everything. IN most cases the harddrive should be fine. Good luck.

Not sure on the hard drive, but if she just spilled water on it today, I wouldnt try turning it on for a few days. It might not be completely dry after one night, even with the most extensive drying.

Tip: Bury it in some rice (uncooked), it helps absorb the water.

Yeah, but problem is she has a big flash project due tomorrow so she kinda needs her stuff lol. and they're all out of rice tongue.gif Guess our best bet would be to remove the harddrive then or get an adapter huh? tongue.gif I think we'll probably give that a go then

When i have washed stuff with water i'll use high % rubbing alcohol to drench it and put it in front of the fan for fast drying. This is on boards not a assembled laptop. Not sure i'd try that.

Heat the oven at its min temp - 170F or so, turn it off, put the HDD in the oven for a few mins (up to 5). Repeat if necessary to get the water out.
