HD4890 Crossfire atikmdag.sys BSOD

Hey Gents,

I have two HD4890s that run at stock speed (850/975). I used to have them both in crossfire though with a glaring problem that eventually frustrated the hell out of me.

When playing games, the system would lock up and BSOD showing atikmdag.sys as the culprit. These lock ups would occur at random mostly 1 or 2 hours into gaming. They never occured on the desktop. They only occur when crossfire is being run.

I'd turn off crossfire and it wouldnt crash. (Since only games use crossfire thats probably why web surfing.. etc on desktop doesnt ever crash whilst crossfire is enabled)

So at the moment I'm running a single card configuration testing each card at a time. The first card I used ran perfect with no crashing. Once I slotted in the 2nd card the following things happened:

1. The computer failed to POST the first time which was odd. Regardless it worked from then on.
2. During my first gaming session with the 2nd card I also locked up (red artefacts littered the screen) so I just reset.
3. One of the DVI-D ports do not work (has two DVI ports).

So I concluded that this card must be faulty and causing CF instabilities. I run both cards at a manual fan speed of 50%+ (even as far as 70% when both were CF and still BSOD) so I dont think heat would be an issue.

Am I right to assume it being faulty even though it only locked up that once?

Since that first crash, I've had a few days of gaming on it since and no crashes... I'm kind of hoping it will crash soon so it will confirm my belief.

So I ask what is the best GFX stress tool/program available to me that would hopefully force an error/crash unto it. I heard Furmark is good?

FYI I used the same GFX configuration in another MB/CPU system and it also crashed, Although the RAM used was the same, but I tested the RAM with prime95, wprime and memtest86 with no errors!

Update, I re-installed both cards and ran Furmark with both GPUs set on 50% fan speed.

Temperatures on full load reached 70 degrees celcius and looking at the log, it ran for about 30min till red artefacts started to occur. As soon as these red artefacts occured the framerate dropped and the temperature also dropped to 60 degrees celcius. As soon as I stopped the stress test I recieved a BSOD with atikmdag error.

Restarted and ran the test again with the fans set at 70% and temps only reached 65 (don't remember but was less then the first run). No crashes though and it ran for 45min. I think if I'd leave it on it would eventually crash due to the random nature of it.

I decided to flash the BIOS on both cards from this version:

GPU Device Id:
113-B79002-102
Wekiva RV790 B79002 Board 850E/975M
ATOMBIOSBK-ATI VER011.022.001.000.032215(Backed it up)

To this version

http://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/45830/Sapphire.HD4890.1024.090319.html

GPU Device Id:
113-B79002-103
Wekiva RV790 B79002 Board 850E/975M
ATOMBIOSBK-ATI VER011.022.001.005.032404

Did a 30min stress test using furmark with both fans set at 40% this time and no issues. Played a game for about an hour and no issues. Maybe this fixed it.

Regardless I'm passing these cards unto a friend to test on his rig to make sure its not just my PC.

could be hardware i suppose, but it sounds more like a driver issue to me.

So I lent both cards to my friend and after a couple hours of playing a game he reported the same BSOD error (atikmdag.sys) and subsequent restart.

It seems one or both are faulty.

I bought both cards on the 09/04/2009 and looking at the sapphire website they should still be within the 2 year warranty although I think the place I got it from only gave a year.
