i do have a GTX460 in my main rig as a physics processor but it's pretty much not used at the moment.. i suspect that may be an alternative "free" option too?

HD 4550 can do it, I have this card and it does have HDMI and I do game on medium settings.

If you want silence, get HD 4550 passively-cooled.

However, if gaming is somewhat important, I recommend you get HD 4650 since it's the same price.

Either one is about $50 or less on Newegg and most other sites.

i think i might just yank my GTX460 out of my main rig as it doesn't really get used at all see how it goes.. if i have trouble can always swap to soemthing else maybe even a HD5450 (only about $45 AUD)

IIRC all 4xx series GPUs come with audio bitstreaming capabilities. Unless all you play is Arkham Asylum/Mafia II/Metro 2033/UT3, your GTX460 is wasting power. You can play pretty much most modern games at 1080p on high with it, but the biggest drawback for use in a HTPC is the size and power requirements. The mid-range 5000 and 6000 series Radeons also fit your criteria (5450/5550/5570/5670/low end 6xxx)

ahh ty very very informative post, i do play UT3 occasionally but more of the time things like need for speed HP or WoW (coz i'm dirty) so i think my best bet is the GTX460

as for power/space my media PC is also my file server in an Antec Three Hundred case with a 520watt PSU with 2 PCI cards (SATA Card/Sound Card) but i think i'll be removing the sound card as bitstreaming wont' really need it...

Since you're using a standard ATX case, space isn't an issue. Best of luck with gaming on your HT setup

got the gtx460 removed form main rig and popped it into the media box

after a quick install of drivers it was off and running like a dream bitstreaming without any hassle at all. nvidia ./win

display is delicious now too

System appears to run faster then the previous 8600GTS i got after my 2nd replacement 7800GT broke from like... 4 years ago

time to test some games

and thanks again for your input Eugenster
