Need help finding a video camera

Thread Starter
So, I have a bit of an interesting application here. I am on my schools ballroom dance team, and we need a video camera to tape dancers so they can watch themselves. Ideally it will be digital with a hard drive or flash memory, for easy transfer to a computer. We will also often be filming to put things up on youtube.

The best part- a $500 budget. I want to get as close to that as possible, because if we dont use it on this, we dont get it at all. (The college is paying for this)

What we need:
1) Videocamera - Decent optical zoom would be nice.
2) Decent tripod- preferably able to pan smoothly, and not be made of lead. (Mildly heavy is just fine. This will be taken to competitions though, so backbreaking isnt what we want- though if it is high quality as far as smoothness of movement and it fits the budget, we can deal with it)
3) Case. - remember, this is for a college team- a hard case would be ideal. I was actually thinking of a toolbox with some foam I could carve out to protect it and hold all the cables / cards. A commercial solution for this could be neat.

What we do NOT need:
1) HD. This would never shoot in HD, so a better camera that is only SD and makes our $500 budget would be far better than a HD camera and a cheap tripod.

Thanks for any help!!

these are just examples to show you that you can easily get it all meeting your budget. in that price range with that budget you not going to get top of the line stuff obviously. in that range almost all the cameras are about the same, a lot of the are HD cameras but they should be able to record in SD. as far as tripods go, anything from walmart would work with the camera you are getting. just dont leave the camera on the tripod and walk away assuming its going to be safe. as far as cases go pelican is what you are looking for but for this type of camera any normal case will do although if its getting thrown around a lot then go with the pelican

there is extra room to get a better camera and with the case that it just an example you will have to find the one that meets the dimension that you need.

hope that gives you a good starting place
