watts too low/bad power supply? - Page 2

I don't know what's causing your problems. But I can elucidate on why your power supply is crap. Diablotek likes to buy power supplies from companies like SunPro, Codegen, and other such companies. They order a bunch of low-end, mediocre units in a cost-down (cheapified) configuration. Then they roll a 12 sided die to pick the wattage that they want to put on the label.

I haven't seen a DA series unit opened up, but their PHD series are all rebrands of the same crappy 250W, everything form the PHD-250 to the PHD-550.

I guess I will be ordering a power supply tomorrow. If someone could suggest a specific power supply or a few different power supplies that are not too expensive that would help. I would prefer to order from tigerdirect.com as they have the 120mm fans I want and I have a discount code (not to mention I usually get my order within a day) but I am open to other suggestions. Guess I will be waiting to buy a fan controller as I will be broke after this. As for overclocking I have no plans currently to overclock as my computer runs faster than I ever expected as is (when it actually does work). If the need arises in the future I may overclock. It appears as though the settings in the bios make it pretty easy. I will invest in a water cooling system at that point.

You appear to know what you are talking about so if you say it is good enough I may just take your word on it.

The reason I bought the power supply in the first place is all the reviews looked good and I figured for the price I would give it a try. Now I see new reviews and they are all bad (some people saying it was doa).

The last build I did had a AMD Athlon 1ghz single core processor (which was good at the time) if that gives you any idea of the learning curve for me now. I should have maybe did more research before I started this build.

First off, NEVER go by the reviews on Newegg. Most of the people who post there don't know their butts from a hole in the ground and post utter nonsense. Go to a Forum like OCN and ask. You'll get much better recommendations.

Even if you add a video card to that setup you wouldn't need more than a 400 to 550 watt psu. Go to the Recommended PSU List here at OCN to get a list of what is worth getting. If they weren't sold out the NeoECO 520 would be a great option for you at $40. Not sure when they will be back in stock, but you might want to check with Newegg on Monday to see if they have any idea. But the NeoECO 400 that Phaedrus recommended should still be able to handle your system with an additional graphics card.

Here is a list of power supplies I am considering. Please tell me which ones would be the best/worst choice (or if they all suck).

Look to see which ones are on the Recommended PSU List I have linked you to in at least two posts so far. That is what it's there for. I would avoid the Rosewill RV2's though as they are their Value Line. The better Rosewill's are the RG series like the RG-630. I would take the NeoECO Phaedrus recommended over the RG-430 though.

The Rosewill RV2 units are all mediocre ATNG units, the Thermaltake is a mediocre HEC unit, the CX600 and SXSII 600W are both decent BUT you won't need 600W unless you're doing Crossfire or SLI. A quality 550W will run any single GPU system including Fermi.

A quality 400W (like the NeoECO) will run most things, including like a quad core and a GTX560 or HD6950. You could step up to the NeoECO 520C if you wanted, though I heard it was out of stock.

I think I am going to go with the corsair cx600. Does anyone see any issues with this power supply? I know it is a little more than I need now but my whole idea when starting this build is I want a lot of room to upgrade so my computer isn't obsolete right away. I was going to do a quad core build with 8gb max memory but I figured I might as well spend a little more now than a lot in the future. I will eventually need a good video card (possibly with dual monitor support) as i am building a homemade hd projector as my main display.

If you're doing it because of the Corsair name you should be smacked upside the head. If you've got some reasoning then please tell me. It may be right or it may be wrong, but I despise when people make decisions based on arbitrary brand identification.
