Yet Another "What Should I Upgrade?" Thread

Hey everyone,

I'm been having an itch to upgrade SOMETHING in my system, but I'm just not sure what. I really don't have a set in stone budget, but I'd like to get the most out of my money, of course.
Future-proofing doesn't matter to me as much as usefulness and resale do, as I plan on upgrading bi-yearly.

To be honest, my rig has been able to power through every game I own with full eye candy, even Crysis at a steady 40 FPS. As you can tell I'm pretty content with the performance of it.
I guess I'm just worried about picking up DAO2 and BC3 or any other upcoming release and not being able to max them at playable framerates. Lacking DirectX11 also makes me feel like I'm missing out on some fun stuff.
I've also been folding quite often, so some new hardware would definitely help out my PPD.

I'm also having a tough time deciding whether to go ahead and pull the trigger on an LGA 1155 motherboard and CPU. With LGA 2011 on the horizon, I feel like I could hold out just a little while longer for it.
Rumors of a PCI-E 3.0 port coming with the LGA 2011 platform also have me worried about picking up a GPU right now.

Anyways, sorry for the long post.
tl;dr I just need some suggestions for what you guys think I should upgrade in my rig. Something that will hold me over until at least next year.

Thansk for reading! I'm looking forward to your input!

Hmm. Maybe you can get an SSD or two for RAID, a second GTX 460 in SLI, or a nice sound card with speakers/headphones.

Being wary of a GPU upgrade because PCI 3.0 is possibly coming is kind of... hmm... analogies fail me at the moment.

Basically PCI-E already overpowers anything out there. The difference between PCIE 2.0 8x and 16x is roughly nil even with the most powerful cards on the market today. Meaning that there is still tons of room in the ol throughput space for a good time coming. Perhaps a card might come out some time down the line that will be 3.0 only, but it's not like the entire market will suddenly jump ship the second the technology is made available (and it's not even confirmed coming out yet).

Your system with addition of a nice beefy new GPU will do quite nicely for a reasonable amount of time to come. I wouldn't recommend an SSD for gaming as it will do nothing beyond load levels slightly faster. It makes a nice system drive but you have to price that at your own comfort zone.

An SSD sounds good, but waiting for these new ones to come out has been making me antsy!
I have a 260, not a 460, but I assume that's just a typo.
Would I be okay with getting a nice headset and sticking to my onboard sound? Please don't flame me for this, but I've just never seen the point of sound cards. Care to enlighten me on their benefits?

$499.99 for a GPU is pretty insane, and I'm not really looking for bleeding edge.
I need a best bang for my buck card, but it has to be significantly better than my 260 to warrant a purchase.
Do you think a 560 would be a smart decision? Knowing the way I operate, I'll probably get the 580 anyway but I'd like your thoughts on the 560.

Thanks buddy! You just gave me an idea to add a poll!
Which video card do you recommend?

I know but all of the numbers being thrown around about 3.0 make a person stop and think for a while. I just don't want the market price of 2.0 cards to drop by an insane amount because of it!
Which GPU would you recommend? I'm looking for a card that will last me as long as my trusty 260!

Thank you for the suggestion, but I just picked up this Silver Arrow a few weeks ago.
Having never seen how it works in person, I wasn't feeling too comfortable with watercooling at the time.
I'll probably do it when I move on to another socket.
Do you have any other suggestions?

If you want a budget card I personally think the 560Ti and the 6870 are great options

How about a nice set of speakers or an Artic Accelero Xtreme for the gpu? You could also sleeve your PSU if you have the time.
