Photorealism? Better than Real Life?
We are VERY close to the point where graphics can not get any better.
In games where graphics are actually used and not just ported over from Console the graphics are stunning. We are so close to the point where graphics are not capable of getting better because the human eye cant tell the difference that its mind blowing.
I agree, they haven't been getting "better" recently, But I think thats due in large part to the fact that they are already so close to maxed out. Again, thats only in games that try for graphics and aren't just ports.
Well how do you know? You are basically doing the same thing when someone questions infinity. We couldn't possibly know if graphics could get better because as far as we are concerned there is no "gap" between what we have now (High Quality 3D) and photorealism (that is when games look close to reality) that we could somehow implement into what we have now. For example, back in the 60's and 70's there was no 3D (at least for gaming). There was 2D and Photorealism (ever since games existed we comprehended that SOMEDAY games would look like reality). Back then, 3D for gaming didn't exist, and when we were pushing the envelope of what 2D graphics could do we were in this same position. "What is there we could possibly do now?" they asked. And back then they didn't think they could advance that further either because they didn't think they could do anymore! "Further", other than Photorealism, didn't exist! But then somehow 3D gaming came, and we found a new artwork to work on, and here we are now!
Think about it like this.
Lets say you are a planet eater. That's right, YOU EAT PLANETS. You start with your first planet called 2D. You don't eat it with one big gulp because it isn't possible, you have to put much time and resources into eating this planet. Also you have this dream in your head that SOMEDAY you will meet this planet called "photorealism" that is just so great, I mean it would satisfy anyones hunger for life! But that planet is far away. Anyway you are about to finish that "2D" planet and then you think "What could I possibly eat now?" I mean there can't possibly be a planet better than this one. This one is quite big, and is quite good tasting. The only planet I could think of is that photorealism planet but hell, I don't think I could ever find that planet.
So you finish that planet and you go on trying to find another planet that is possibly bigger and better tasting, but you keep encountering similar small and "alright" tasting planets that are just like the one you already ate! BUT THEN, you find this new planet called "3D" ( I know the names suck) and it is a lot bigger and juicer than "2D'. And it might not be as tasty as "Photorealism" but hell, it is just great. And you think there can't possibly be a planet other than "Photorealism" that tastes better than 3D, but little do you know that even though TO YOU that planet could never exist, it is somewhere out there, waiting to be eaten, and it is again not photorealism, but it is way better than 3D and way bigger!
I hope I explained this as simple as possible ( I am having one of those days), and please tell me how much I failed
