Entry level a Canon 550D should be fine. (T2i)

I'm not a hard core photographer but my T1i does just fine

The canon 550d as mentioned or the Nikon D3000/3100.

Canon T2i via CLP or Nikon D3100 are my suggestions. If you want to buy new, a Canon T1i works as well. The new Canon T3 also looks pretty good for a beginner (comparable to the T1i).

With any of those cameras, I'd get the 18-55mm IS/VR (Canon/Nikon, respectively) kit lenses along with the 50mm f/1.8 for Canon and 35mm f/1.8 for Nikon.

o gawd....i cried a little.....

the biggest problem with the noise is that sony cameras have HORRIBLE noise if you shoot JPG. you have to shoot RAW and use either the included sony software or LR3 to process pictures.

if you have discounts for sony then i would suggest to just stay with sony. theres no reason to use a nikon or canon when sony can accomplish the same at a cheaper price. look at the sony a55 or the a580, they are better suited for a beginner then the a850.
