Thread Starter
hey guys so im a total newb when it comes to OCing the i7 cpus, is there any way to OC the cpu with out it changing the ram speeds???
the reason im asking is because i want to go higher then 4.2 but my ram is 1333mhz and when its at 4.2 its sitting at 168somthing, so thats already pushing it, and when go above that it fails,
TALKING ABOUT MY SIG RIG HERE

so there is any way to unlink the ram from cpu oc????
if not what volatge should my ram be???

First of all, you should be running at a 21x multiplier and therefore at 200 BCLK. This will leave your RAM at 1600Mhz, which is still pushing it. With some loosened timings it ought to make it though. Regardless, this is why the speed of RAM can be a bottleneck in extreme overclocks. If you want to keep pushing it, you'll either need a higher CPU multiplier or better RAM. With some luck it should take 1.6Ghz, though.

i think you can lower the ram's multiplier or get better ram. Ram should be 1.65V/1.66V when maxed out.

The RAM is always linked to the baseclock. You can change the multiplier though. The 2:6 multi will give you plenty of headroom and still keep the RAM under spec up to a 222 baseclock.

As for getting the 21 multi it seems all the boards handle that different. With my ASus board the +1 turbo multi is available as just another CPU Ratio option. On my EVGA P55 board I have to enable speedstep and turbo but leave C1E off and it auto adds the +1. I haven't messed with the EVGA X58 boards enough to know for sure how to get it on that board. It should be available, just play around with it a bit LOL.

Hey bud

Read this:
http://www.evga.com/forums/tm.aspx?m=20028&mpage=1

That guide is perfect for our boards and CPU... I would recommend researching the BIOS if you can not stabilize at high clock speeds due to board limitations.

Few things I will add, set everything manually

You will have to OC that RAM from the 1333 to 1600+

I recommend 1800 or even 2k RAM if you can do a upgrade, that would allow you to reach 4.2+Ghz with ease

I am hoping to get 2k RAM and I want to push up to 4.5 for my current rebuild.

Good luck.

Dude you rock!
Enable speedstep: check
enable turbo: check
disable c1e: check

4.2 W0000000000000000T!

Thats with the speed step on. Even so I had to do 1.38 just to hit 4.0
Lets not forget this is a dell alienware and there aren't to many options in the bios. I am happy with the temps, also. This is bios version a11 when I first recieved the computer it was version a04 and i was hitting 80c + at only a 3.8oc.
Sorry for the threadjack.

Oh I didn't notice that before, maybe a C0 stepping CPU? but I am willing to bet it is a D0 because you should need even more volts @ 4.2Ghz on a C0

Speed step on makes what bit of difference????

I run 4.2Ghz and 1.35 but get much lower temps (w/h50), HT on, speed step on,... only reason I say anything

Anyways nice OC for a prebuilt
