Add a 2nd GTX 480 for SLI or get a GTX 580

Thread Starter
I'm currently on a dilemma and don't know what choice will suit me best so I really need some opinions.
As stated in the title, I could get a used GTX 480 for $200 to put in SLI for my upcoming Sandy Bridge build or sell my GTX 480 and get the GTX 580.
I'll get a new PSU so power consumption won't be an issue here.
It's obvious that GTX 480 SLI >> GTX 580 but that would be a trade off for power consumption (I can live with this), noise, and heat. I don't know how 2x480 sound like but I'm trying to minimize the noise for my next build so quiet is definitely my top concern here.
As for a single GTX 580 I will lose performance and since I won't add a 2nd 580 anytime soon considering the cost, I don't really know what is best for me at this particular moment.

your psu can't handle sli 480

edit: where do you get gtx 480 for $200 from? I wouldn't mind 1 for that price
sli 480 would net you like at least a 90% performance increase whereas a 580 would only get you a 20% performance increase
So performance wise sli 480 but you also need a new psu

I would say gtx 480 sli for the win. But looking at you power supply you would have to upgrade that too. Sell the gtx 480 and pick up a gtx 580

Add a second gtx480.Now this card is really cheap so it would be a great deal. But dont forget that your 650w psu isnt enough for these cards

I edited the thread to make it clear, I'll be buying all the new parts for my upcoming build and won't be using any parts on my current system (except the video card) so I know I would need to get a new PSU.
And thank you all for the quick responses. Yet I still need an insight into heat/noise issue for GTX 480 SLI.

Here is the link shown some numbers between GTX480 SLI and GXT580. However, gtx480 is a 250w GPU so you need a 'bigger' PSU (you already mentioned in your post, may look for a solid 850w+ unit) if you go for second GTX480.
The 480 sli would be more powerful, but first you have to ask yourself if you really need that much power?

The 580 runs much cooler and quieter, and you won't have to deal with any of the drawbacks of sli. Your current PSU also won't need upgrading.

fakeedit: I just noticed you have two 2560x1600 displays - in that case I would go with 480sli if 570 or 580sli is out of the question...

Your third option is to wait and see what the new dual-gpu cards bring.

A GTX580 is only 15% faster than GTX480 so you probably would not even notice a upgrade..

Now you could OC your GTX480 and easily outperform GTX580..

My GTX480 @ 850/1025 scores ~500Pts more in Graphic score 3DMark 11 than stock GTX580 does..

Now regarding SLI you would need to upgrade your PSU to a quality 850W unit to be able to run and OC 2 x GTX480..

And SLI GTX480 would destroy a single GTX580..

CHEERS..

He already has the 480 Superclock... how much more OC can he do without having to spend a bunch of money on aftermarket cooling or just have to listen to a loud 480 fan from high OC? an OC would at least be a free "upgrade".
--
I suggest the 580, later down the road get a bigger PSU and another 580 if you really want to do SLi.

I appreciate for all the inputs, however my concern here is also the noise/heat of the GTX 480 SLI. Would they be crazy loud at full load and how are the temps?

You seem to be in my direction, that's why I said it's really a dilemma.
