Oc 6870?

Thread Starter
So, I want to overclock my 6870 and I looked at the tutorial stickie. My 6870 is the HIS variant. I got the core to 965mhz (from 900) and I didn't mess with the memory clock yet.

Does anybody with this card have their personal results of what they have found to be stable for core and memory? Stock cooling only.

Should I manually set my fan speed or leave it on auto?

As for artifacts, in gputool how long should I let it run and how many artifacts (and when during the stability test do they occur) is allowed stable? Or is NO artifacting allowed?

Just to double check... under load I want to keep temps below 85C? Correct?

And for my last question.... If I have it set to apply the overclock at startup am I running any major risk of frying my card or it's like a processor where leaving it OC'ed is fine?

I know I sound dumb but I have never overclocked a gpu before.

TY IN ADVANCE

As I can only speak for myself I use MSI AfterBurner and I have a Fan speed profile as the temperature rises as does my fan speed.

As for personal overclocks each card is different no two cards will probably be the same in the sense that what my card does your's will do. But on that same note I generally see people on 6870's with 1000/1300 and above but remember to keep your voltage under 1.3V.

But in Furmark/GPUTool I generally allow it to run for about 10-20 minutes or so and that generally allows me to know if I'm doing good. But if you see Artifacts back your overclock off a little. But your card will PROBABLY be able to reach 1000/1300 no problem at or under 1.3V.

Graphics card can hit up to 100C and be ok BUT we wouldn't advise that here, I mainly try to keep everything under about 75C without the fan to high(I wear headphones so sometimes I just crank that bad boy up)

You're not running any risk but what I would do is set the overclock to come up on 3D applications or just save it to a Profile and click and apply it then it may take a couple of seconds but, when you start your Computer and you're just surfing the web, checking your e-mail, and watching youtube, and ETC there's no need for the overclock to be on imo.

It's alright we all have to start somewhere

I'm stable at 950/1150 with my 6870's.

I set a profile in ccc overdrive 30% fan and stock clocks for normal browser email use.

950/1150 with 50% fan for gaming etc. Keeps temps under 70.

It could be my card but the stock fan profiles suck for me. if I leave everything normal and the fan on auto it only goes to 30% and 90-95 degrees when playing a game.

see.. at about 970 with fan speed on auto I start to artifact. I would kill to crack 1000 but I tried and it insta artifacts... how did you make a profile that steps the speed in correlation with temps? Also .. msi afterburners slider stops at 1000 .. what do people use to crack that?

Ccc overdrive is greyed out for me. I can't figure out why.

In MSI AB did you change you're EnableUnofficialOverclocking value to 1? This will allow your slider to past the 1000Mhz value but if you're artifacting at 970 have you tried increasing your Core Voltage a little, and if so what is it at?

In the config file the only thing I was able to find similar to that was coreoverclockmode or something of the sort... possibly wrong config file I looked at. And no I have not.increased voltage at all

Well with an increase of Voltage this will allow to have a higher GPU clock just like increasing your CPU Voltage enables a higher clock as well. This will also allow you to hit 970+ without artifacting.

But its the MSiAfterburner CFG File and all the way at the bottom, you should see that but change your Unofficial from 0 to 1.

EnableUnofficialOverclocking= 1

Ok, ty! In msi the spot for increasing core temp is easily visible i assume? Also.. *** is this unlocking ati card I see floating around? I assume I.can't with my card

And earlier u mentioned you have your Gpu fan set to get faster with temp... how?
