Can someone explain to me>

Hi, a couple of newbie questions. I downloaded CPU-Z and it is showing the core speed 1596MHz, but after a sleep when I restarted it was showing 3326MHz. I have the i7 950@3.07GHz. Just wondering why it was above stock?

I am still new on here and am reading as much as I can on overclocking as I would like to get to 4GHz but dont want to make a mess so I am just probing at the moment. I did notice in the BIOS there is no tweeking software like I have seen on here in some of the BIOS.

I have also downloaded MSI Afterburner to play around with the GTX470 as it seems quite easy to use. Stock settings Core 607MHz Shaders 1215MHz but when I cranked the core upto 800MHz and then ran MSI Kombuster it crashed after about 30secs. Gone back to stock of 607MHz and everything back to normal.
I also had a play with Nvidia N Tune but that was a load of poo as my system just crashed and I had to do a system restore. Anyone else think it is pants?
Like I said I am a newbie so just toying around at the moment.
Here are some more detailed specs of my pc.

Ascer Predator Crusador 2 G7750
Intel Core i7 950@3.07GHz WaterCooled
Windows 7
Chipset Intel X58
Southbridge Ibtel 82801JR(ICH10R)
BIOS: American Megatrends Inc. Version P01-A2
Memory DDR3 6144 MBytes, DRAM 532.0MHz, FSBRAM 2:8, CL 7.0 clocks,tRCD 7 clocks, tRP 7 clocks, tRAS 20 clocks, tRFC 59 clocks, CR 1T
NVIDAI GTX 470
PCU:1000W (Dont know make as no markings)

In Advance thanks for any replys. Any tips/help would be most welcome.

Can you clarify how you are overclocking? You mention software, and the BIOS, so are you doing it in the BIOS, or with software?

As for your video card, how hot did it get? I set up a custom fan profile so basically at 80C, it's 100% fan.

The cpu downclock is due to intel speedstep being on in the bios... It is an energy saving feature and automatically downclocks your CPU to save power when it is not under load.

And the GPU overclock takes lots of tweaking you cant just crank it up like that and expect it to work, you have to push it up gradually untill you get to a high stable clock.

Not changed any of the BIOS settings, I only went through it all to take a look. As for the card I think it was at 94 but would have to test again to confirm.

Turbo boost feature stepping up your multiplier when you use it (and down when you idle, think it's the same feature). I'm not super into it but that's the basic idea

assuming ur processor is not oced and u have not touched anything in bios...

1) the downclocking is due to intel speedstep...its a power saving feature which downclocks the cpu when not under sufficient load to save power...

2)the higher frequency is due to intel turbo boost which increases the core speed of processor upto a certain limit as per requirements......

Yep the cpu hasnt been o/c. I understand about speedstep as there is a feature in the Bios for turbo mode.

94 is a bit on the warm side. The card should be able to handle it, but I would suggest against getting it that warm. Go through MSI Afterburner and set up a custom fan profile to your liking.

Ah, I didn't know that was the stock frequency.

Just ran afterburner again and was messing around. went from 607MHz to 700MHz but increased the fan speed to 90%. Ran MSI and temp stayed at 74c. The ran MOH and played for 15mins and the temp never went over 74c. Is running the fan at 90% a bad thing while gaming for a couple of hours? How long qould the card last? Sorry if this is a stupid question.
