ips screen for gaming

heeeey,

I'm looking to buy a new monitor, i currently have a samsung 120 hz 1680x1050 and really that 120hz is great but the resolution is just too low and the image quality can be alot better. Ive read alot of good stuff about IPS monitors but most of them have high input lag. The dell u2311h and the nec 231wmi look really nice and they are the only ones i have found that should have low input lag. I can also go safe and buy the benq xl2410t but thats just another TN panel and that feels like a waste of money. Does anyone have experience with these or other IPS monitors? what monitor do you guys recommend?

I use HP ZR24W (1920x1200) on my gaming rig. I have had no issues with input lag on FPS games and looks great.

Love my ZR30w... wouldn't trade it for any other monitor on the market.

right now im really having a hard time deciding between these:

dell u2311h
hp zr24
nec 231wmi

the dell looks really good imo. is IPS really better or is it a bit overrated?

IPS is better. It's why Photo-editors use them. Go with the Dell.

Oh hey you're back

Back on topic:

I'm not exactly sure if an IPS would be what you're looking for. Photo editors like myself love IPS monitors for their color accuracy.

Blacks are deeper and whites are brighter on IPS monitors, definitely. However, with colors, you might not get what you're looking for. Most monitors these days oversaturate colors, in that, the colors are more vibrant than they're suppossed to be. When you switch to a color-accurate monitor like an IPS, the colors will probably be duller than you'd be expecting.

That said, resale values are usually great on an IPS, so even if you don't like it, you can probably resell it at a good price.

Dunno, but I can't play any games in other modes except sRGB. In BC2 other color modes the colors are either too dark or too bright or too vibrant. In sRGB the colors look right, shadowed areas are dark as they're suppose to be. In the lighthouse in Valparaiso it's suppose to be realistically dark. With a TN monitor things looked washed out.

OP, if you're any bit competitive in FPS games the IPS panel will lag behind the 120Hz. I find the IPS monitor to be good for slow paced games like MMO, great for color accuracy, excellent image quality, and good for people who wear glasses because you can increase the sharpness etc. for reading. But as general, IPS is not good for FPS because you lag a few frames behind most people on normal TN monitors. Just don't expect miracles to happen though. You should maybe consider a VA panel if you want to balance things between TN and IPS. It has a little bit of both good things of IPS and TN panels. I used to own a Dell VA panel, kind of regret selling it. It had the perfect blend of good response time, good image quality, and accurate enough colors. The only reason I sold it was because it could not do HDCP so I couldn't play back any movies that required HDCP. VA's are excellent panels though, they balance the best of both worlds instead of needing 2 monitors TN + IPS.

Thanks for the replies, i actually play alot of FPS games and low input lag is very important for me but i also like eye candy. I am really close to getting the dell u2311h and apparently it even has less lag than my current TN: samsung 2233rz

So i will be dropping 120hz for better image quality and higher resolution, worth it?
