I don't understand why amd's stream hasn't became more mainstream or caught on. The hardware and is just as capable isn't it? Seems to me it just doesn't have support on the software side our something. Any one know?

Nvidia spends more money trying to actively promote CUDA. AMD hasn't historically been doing that.

OpenCL will see more broad hardware support than CUDA since CUDA is proprietary and only works on Nvidia cards. Companies that jumped on the CUDA bandwagon already will probably continue to support it.

Yeah...
You do realize that Nvidia supports OCL as an alternative to CUDA right?

If given the choice between standardized SDKs & adaptation or "openness" I choose the former.

Though I'm not sure how popular OCL is in the context that I'm praising Nvidia.

Lots of words up there ^^^^ I don't understand lol

Will CUDA 4.0 have a direct effect on average end-users or is it something software developers implement and then we glean the effects when using software?

I love, love, love Xilisoft's GPU video encoding. So much difference compared to CPU encoding. Will the next gen of software, using CUDA 4.0, benefit me - an average user?

Standards often stifle industry progress when they are proprietary. OCL would be more widely implemented if Nvidia hadn't assumedly wrapped up such a large sum in promoting CUDA as the end-all of GPU compute. Until both major players are on board, we'll get only a fraction of the benefits that a collective effort would provide.

Surely, you're not that blind, are you?
