New to overclocking; Using N460GTX 1GB & MSI Afterburner

Well I'm completely new to overclocking, so please forgive my newbie-ness and go easy on me!

I got an MSI N460GTX Hawk as a gift from my brother last Christmas, and I've been wanting to overclock this thing for awhile, but I only started to delved into it recently.

A couple places I've searched on how to do overclocking say that overclocking is simple and easy, yet I can't get the hang of this at all.

Here's what I was told:

Quote:
*SAVE YOUR DEFAULT PROFILE
*START RAMPING UP CORE/SHADER/MEMORY CLOCK IN LITTLE INCREMENTS
*TEST WITH KOMBUSTOR FOR A MINUTE, IF NO ARTIFACTS APPEAR THEN GO HIGHER
*IF IT INSTANTLY CRASHES; IT'S NOT GETTING ENOUGH JUICE. RAISE THE VOLTAGE
*RINSE AND REPEAT
From what I was told, I thought it would be that simple.

I've been raising the core and shader clock together and the memory clock in said increments of 5. I ran Kombustor each time and noticed no artifacts. I managed to get 900/1800/2100 with no artifacts, but the kombustor benchmark started crashing a few minutes after minutes.

I've also been using Heaven benchmark to test and it starts to crash around 850/1700/1900

I tried raising just the core voltage up by 10+ mV and it doesn't seem to help, and I'm afraid to raise the core voltage any further at the moment.
Any advice for a newb overclocker?

Also: The fan speed is left on auto.

Ok ive been at this little while now so ill save you any hasstle and just tell you the best way ( in my opinnion ) dont even listen to anyone else, this will achiveyour maximum overclock safe and easy

Download OCCT stress test, is by far the best for stressing and checking the gpu for errors.

Also make sure you have afterburner 2.0 so that you can take advantage of the Hawks triple overvoltage.

Now afterburner has limits, and they are completey safe, as they are tested by msi, on the hawk, and afterburner 2.0 is specifically for the hawk.

Start up OCCT and go to gpu stress test, there will be a tick box for error checking, tick it. This will then show you any errors that are detected.

Make it so the test is infiniate, since your going to be at it a while. there is also a shader intensity setting, just leave it on 0 as OCCT is wild enough on the gpu.

Simply run the test in a low res like 640x640 or whatever, to allow you to see the rest of your desktop and be able to easily watch afterburner and its graphs.

let it run for a few mins to bring the temp up to whatever its going to level out at, so that its not going to ramp up and surprise you when adjusting voltages etc....

Make sure you have voltage altering etc.. enabled in afterburner by ticking the box in the settings.

Now simply increase the core mhz by 25 mhz about every few mins, its fine while its running, and you will eventially run into errors.

When the errors appear (even 1) stop occt by closing the window. This is so that when we start again we will have the error counter back to 0 making it easier to see errors rather than remembering the number it was at.

Now before you begin the test again, up the vcore by 10mv (+10mv in afterburner 2.0) or 10 in the previous version. Run the test to check for errors again, with more voltage now the card should be handling the frequency fine, if there are errors again stop, add another 10mv.

Dont worry about maxing the vcore voltage out (+100mv) it is safe, the limit used to be +200mv before msi altered it, as too many people where trying to hit the 1GHz overclock and blowing their VRMS which are the current supplier chips, which get VERY hot at that kind of voltage.

Thats basically it. Just keep going, and make sure you get the card error free by upping the voltage before you push for even higher mhz.

You could also just set the vcore to the maximum and see how far you get before it artifacts, then back it of a few mhz, but alot of the time you wont need the full voltage, and sometimes the excess heat genarated will actually limit your overclock as chips overclock higher when they are cooler.

I wouldnt touch the memory or aux voltage untill you know what your doing, as they reportedly dont help and this will put more stress on the cards vrms etc.

After you find your max stable core frequency, repeat the steps with your memory

Make sure the card doesnt get too hot , they are rated to run abouve 100c, but personally i wouldnt like it running at or over 80c

good luck and dont blame me if you fry your card lol

Quick question:

From time to time while running OCCT, I would up the core speed using Afterburner while the tests were running and hit apply. Whenever I hit apply, the screen would go black and then come back up with windows saying that the drivers were recovered.

Also to mentioned: The OCCT benchmark test is still running and is reporting zero errors.
Is this good or bad? Should I be upping the voltage or not? I currently have core voltage at 40+ mV.

Hmmm thats a sign of instability if the drivers reset. If its doing that then theres not enough voltage. Try more voltage, then run the test again. Dont be afraid to bring it up to +100mv. Just keep an eye on your temps. Again im not responsible if it breaks lol. If it does its rma time as it should be fine and withinn warranty. Even wack it right up to +100 and see how far it will go before artifacts or drivers reset. If all is well try bringing it down in steps of 5mv to get the voltage low as poss.
