[TheInquirer]Modder overclocks Motorola Xoom to 1.5GHz

TABLET MANUFACTURER Motorola has been holding back the performance capabilities of its Xoom tablet, as shown by a talented modder who managed to overclock the tablet to 1.5GHz.
Motorola's Xoom tablet is equipped with Nvidia's Tegra 2 dual core chip that plods along at 1GHz. It's not that the chip is particularly slow but a chap at Xda Developers Forum managed to bump up the clock speed by 50 per cent and keep it stable enough to run a suite of benchmarks.
The procedure to overclock a Xoom isn't quite as easy as jumping into the BIOS and fiddling with a couple of settings, however it's far from rocket science. After unlocking the Xoom's bootloader and rooting the device, it's a matter of loading a new boot image with a kernel that supports the higher chip frequencies.
Running the Quadrant benchmark, the 1.5GHz Xoom tablet showed 40 per cent higher performance over a standard Xoom running at 1GHz.

Wow. Nice.

Tomorrow we will see a 2.0 then a 3.0 and then supercooled and at 4.0.........

Hmm, I thought the Tegra 2 processor on the Xoom outputs 2GHz, with one core at 1GHz each. Guess I was wrong then. tongue.gif

Good job on the overclock! I bet we'll be getting around 2-2.5GHz max on this thing

Let me know when the manufacturer underclocks that ridiculous price tag.

Does this mean they have cracked the Atrix bootloader? Also since the Atrix and the Xoom both use a tegra2 processor does that mean that the Atrix can get to those speeds to?

idk it doesnt seem necessary to run this at higher speed if its going to run down the battery quicker, that just defeats the purpose of a portable device especially a tablet . good to know it can be done though.

1 Ghz per core = 1 Ghz
2 Ghz per core = 2 Ghz

Speeds dont add up like you seem to think they do..

Been all over the Xoom XDA forums today. Anyone know when the WiFi version is coming out? I can fork out $800 right now to pick it up but if the $600 WiFi version is out in a couple weeks I'd just wait.

Ugh, just read it costs $278 to produce a 3G Xoom...that's rather upsetting....GoGo Costco 90 day return policy.

Think I might wait till at least Wednesday to see what Apple has....as much as I hate Apple I am curious if they decide to put a USB port or SD Card slot on the thing.
