Socket 754 cooler

Thread Starter
I'm needing to swap out the stock cooler on an old socket 754 machine. As a general rule, do AM2 coolers generally work on 754, or should I look for something which specifically lists socket 754. I was thinking about this one, however, the instructions listed for it are the same for K8 or AM2, which worries me.

That cooler should work fine for your 754. I would also recommend the ZALMAN CNPS 9700 NT if you are planning on putting some juice through that baby as it would be more than sufficient.

Edit: Socket 754, 939, and am2 should all be compatible as far as coolers. Hope this helps.

Either way goodluck!

Thanks a bunch. This is for an old computer for my occasional need for XP. It's extremely loud, so I was looking for something quiet. It's good to know that 754 & 939 are compatible with AM2

That cooler is nice, but overpriced for your needs.

Here's a quiet and durable solution for $16.99 that even allows for some OCing if you want to do that.... the Arctic Alpine AC:

You'd save a a few bucks and still get a more than adequate cooler.

Or, for a few bucks more, a more thoroughly modern design using similar principles for the fan... the Zalman CNPS5X SZ 92mm Hydraulic... $24.

I like that Artic Alpine, especially the price. The mobo is not PWM. I just cannot stand to hear 3000 RPM running all the time. As a side node, I tried replacing the dusty old fan from the stock HS with the fan from a stock Athlon II X2 heatsink. This wasn't the source of my squealing. I think the real culprit is the lame aftermarket HSF I once added to the old Radeon AGP (old fan died). I think I might be swapping that out if I can find an old passively cooled AGP card. I only wish the mobo had onboard video
