Minecraft Server: Connectivity?

Thread Starter
Now, I recently decided to open a Minecraft server so I downloaded the Java server .exe from Minecraft and opened it, along with my game executable.

I recently opened my ports and followed all of the steps carefully in order to do that. It said that port 25565 (Minecraft) was opened via this website:

http://www.yougetsignal.com/tools/open-ports/

Once I accomplished that, I tested to see if the server was working by typing "localhost" into where it tells you to type the IP of a server and it worked, which means my server is operational.

However, when I try to connect to it using my external IP (I also tested this on my girlfriend's laptop with her account) it says the connection has timed out and then the Minecraft server .exe tells me that someone tried to connect but failed.

What am I doing wrong? I've typed this into where it says "Enter the IP of a server to connect to it:

"EDITED" <--- My external IP

And I've tried typing this in:

"EDITED"

The only thing that seems to connect me is when I type in "localhost" to personally check whether the server is operating or not but that doesn't help me because I'd like to play with my friends but cannot.

Could someone help me? I'd appreciate it.

make sure that your windows firewall isn't blocking the program. Make sure that your ports are forwarded to the correct IP address inside your network.

Well, the ports are supposed to be forwarded to my IPv4 Address. That's what I was told by the networking guys here. Also, I did a test on that website and it mentioned that the ports were open so I assume I did it correctly.

Well windows firewall could still be blocking it. To test if it is the firewall or not without having to go through setup is just turn off the firewall and then test it, if it works, then you need to configure your firewall properly.

It has nothing to do with my firewall. I just shut it off completely and I'm still encountering this problem. I grabbed my girlfriend's laptop and entered my external IP into the multiplayer box and it said she was connecting. A few seconds later, it said the connection timed out and I received a message on my Java Minecraft server .exe that she had tried to connect but the connection was lost.

Is your gf's laptop on your wireless network trying to connect using your external IP?

Really? Well, try and connect again. It should inform me that you've joined. What is your IP?

And yes, she is on my network. She cannot connect using the external IP and I cannot even connect using the external IP. The only way I can enter my own server is by typing "localhost."

Have you by chanced tried connecting using your local IP address instead of using localhost. You can connect to a server with local host without even having a network connection, see if you can connect with the internal IP.

Well yesterday I tried your supplied ip to see if I was able to connect to your server.

Today I go to play and quickly hit connect thinking I would be joining my server not realizing I still had your ip typed in.

As soon as I join like 3 guys start asking me who I am and I quickly explained im from ocn and was connected by mistake.

Shortly afterwards I get banned. LOL

Guess I learned to never help you in the future. Dick move, GG
