It should be marked on the cable what gauge wire the cable uses. Look in the specs for the PSU to find what it draws. The NZXT HALE90 650W shows it has a 10A draw so you should be fine using any cable using any of those gauges. If in doubt, load the system as heavily as possible and grab hold of the power cord. It if gets more than luke warm you need to get a heavier cable.

18ga = 10A max
16ga = 13A max
14ga = 15A max

It's good to know. Btw, I saw those cables listed as 125v, 10A so I assume they're the same?

Not to mention already that also take into consideration full load ratings and voltage drops. There is going to be more heat dissipated on the finer gauges and more voltage loss. It won't be huge since it's only 6ft or less, we're talking AC here not DC anyways.
A 1000W psu at 75% efficiency is 10Amps full load 125V .
800W psu 80% efficiency is using 8 Amps.

For example, look at the wire size on a 1625W hair dryer. Chances are its 18 gauge.
Also the wire ratings will go up with the temperature rating on the pvc jacket. If it's 75*C it should be safe to run that 18ga cord at 1625W constantly.

A practical test for this would to set up some alligator clips on across line 1 and neutral on the inside of your PSU while it is off. Hook them into your multi-meter and load your computer fully. If the voltage is within 5% +/- you're doing good.

And hot to the touch means nothing. Always get a real temperature measurement, and make sure it's not exceeding the rated level on the PVC jacket.

So basically, the CM power cord is a bit thicker than the NZXT one, does that mean I have nothing to worry about? Or I'll have to start real temp measurement?

It doesn't matter.

10A at 120VAC is ~1200W. You will never pull anywhere near that much power.

yeah your fine, go ahead and replace it, wire thinkness is very unlikely to cause any kind of issue, within reason of course. your good to go trust me wink.gif

Yes you can.

As a rule of thumb, thicker is better.

You've nothing to worry about using a lead from a quality PSU like the CM

So many things wrong here. Any electrical device drawing 1,625 watts at 120v would never be able to pass UL listing with 18 gauge wire. 1625watts is 13.5 amps so it would need at least a 14gauge wire to pass the UL listing tests. 18gauge wires would literally catch fire no matter what the temp rating of the insulation was. 1,200 watts at 120v is the maximum for 18gauge wire period. No ifs, ands, or buts about it.
