Different ping across different hardware

Thread Starter
Hey guys, this is something I can't get my head around. I know ping is the measurement of sending packets of data ect ect. But here is what happened. My friends and I were at at LAN, and there was some obvious differences in computer hardware. I was running my computer in my sig, and my friend was running an AMD Opteron @1.8 with 2gb RAM and 8800GTS GPU. Now, my ping was around 90-100, while his was 280-350. This was at a LAN where we were all connected into the same router using the exact same internet connection. Can someone explain why his ping was so high? Does it have to do with hardware? Is there any way to lower his ping?

I would assume it's his network controller, as it seems his system's quite a bit older than yours. Getting a decent network card would most likely help.

He's using onboard LAN from a Biostar 6100-939 if that's any indication.

Just looked it up...Realtek RTL8201BL 10/100mbps LAN.

Would any NIC card be better? I don't really know what makes a good NIC card and how to tell if it is better than the onboard.

Look for something like an Intel gigabit NIC, or a Broadcom NetXtreme.
