Mineral oil PC inside another bigger tank half full with fridge cooled water! Thought

I want to get a mineral oil system but I thought hey! If I got a bigger tank and surrounded half the mineral oil pc in cooled water it would help with the heat. Sounds crazy but in theory could it work as long as water did not touch any components

Yes, you should totally do it. What's stopping you? I am SURE it will work this time. kookoo.gif

You mean put the mineral oil tank inside another tank filled with water? Or put a radiator with water running through it in the mineral oil tank?

I don't really understand your idea, maybe you could sketch it?
I think the water would have to be extra cold in order to pull the heat from the oil.
But I don't know.

The rad would be out of the tanks like normal. The pc tank (tank 1) would be inside tank 2 which would be filled HALFWAY with water ( so it's not close to getting to pc components) tank 2's water would be getting cooled by some kind of mini fridge mod. And I will draw it when I get home smile.gif

The only thing that would make sense would be to just chill the mineral oil directly. Why add water into the equation?

You could use a water-cooled heat exchanger to pull the heat away from the mineral oil.

But if I understand your idea correctly, it won't do squat. You can't expect an acrylic tank to transmit any heat to surrounding water.

Your best bet would be a heat exchanger like I said with rads outside the case as normal.

But why not just watercool?

I think it would be better to just have a rad with fans attached dropped into the oil and then circulate the cold water through the rad.

This way your moving the oil through the rad for more effective heat transfer.

Honestly I am not a fan of oil cooling at all. There are many better alternatives out there.

Yea, acrylic happens to be a good insulator, the water in tank 2 wouldn't really help anything unless tank one was made out of thin metal to transfer to heat of the oil to the water.

I want to see someone try Tw34k's idea. Maybe you could use those super high flow, loud 80mm fans inside the oil. That way they would still move oil at a decent rate and they'd be almost silent! biggrin.gif
