Need Mobo recommendation for replacing stock HP MOBO to OC

Hi,

I would really like to OC my 2.4 x4 phenom quad core even if it's only couple hundered MB increase. Unfortunately, my MOBO is one of those stock HP ones where the BIOS version has been repackaged by HP and doesn't allow OC from the BIOS menu or from any software for that matter.

So the solution I have is to replace the MOBO with one that allows it. I do not want to spend too much but here's my question. The CPU uses AM2+ sockets but I know that it is also compatible with AM3 socketed MOBOs as well. I'm thinking of either getting an AM3 MOBO so that it opens up the potential for future upgrades, or get an AM2+ MOBO which will just allow me to OC my CPU. I have the desire to go with the former choice if the price difference isn't that huge. I really don't know anything about MOBO market price.

Also, would swapping the MOBO be an easy task? I mean, would a simple swap work?

One thing to consider is that OEM manufactured systems use there own connectors which makes it real tough for a swap over. Not sure about HP. Another thing to look into would be cooling the cpu. Most OEM systems are bare minimum in this area, that's why they're so quiet. Also case air flow is usually about the same, bare minimum and when you look at all these things together it usually isn't worth doing. That's my

I think that you should just go to Newegg and look at some boards. There are quite a few that would work.

But is it really worth it?

It would some what depend on how mechanically inclined a person is. From the pic it looks like it might work but one area in particular that isn't shown real well in pic is what they call the 9 pin header for front case connections. I've read a few threads where people have some problems in this area because the OEM has the same functions to connect but they may use different style connector plug and or use unlabeled wire which for the novice can be a problem to figure which one goes to which pin. Does that make sense?
A couple other obstacles would be what are you thinking of using for ram? This would also have to be factored in the choice of the mobo as not all ram can be run on all mobo's. Some are specific, you'd have to take the time look at the Qualified Vendors List for the new mobo and verify your old ram is compatible with new mobo. This QVL can be found at the new chosen mobo manufacture site in downloads. Wouldn't hurt to also verify the CPU as well, better to know these things before laying out cash right?
Like I mentioned in previous post, it can probably be done depending on the skill/experience level of the man in charge of doing the swap. Than when you figure the time all this may take, it becomes a personal call as to is it worth doing or not. Than lastly, OC'ing on an OEM power supply? That's another iffy thing to attempt, than add in the fact of the present age of the rest of the current components and think about how much you'd have into the new mobo alone (maybe 50-$70.00) maybe less, ask yourself is it all worth the trouble or not. My guess would be probably not. Only as an example take a look on Newegg.com at an Asus M4A785-M ($64.00 last I looked) it might give you an idea anyway and be a good mobo to just see if it would even work. It uses DDR2 ram, has onboard graphics and sound like what you presently have, plus it's an M-ATX size mobo. Just a guess.

It really is best to ditch the OEM and build new. The quality of some OEM components can be subpar.

Thanks for the comments. I have been looking around and have been coming to a general sense as considering a mobo swap as not worth the time and price. I mean, it seems doable, and I do have DDR2 RAMs and the suggested board sound like it may work. I did upgrade PSU to 500 W already from an OEM of measly 300W so OCing would have been likely.

However, I found out that X4 9750 doesn't really allow for substantial OCing and from my research and from your comments, it seems switching the mobo would be too much work aside from the fact that there may be unexpected roadblocks in the process as well due to the system being OEM.

As I said in another thread, I will just upgrade the video card on this system for now.

I'm actually starting a research to build a new system that will suit my needs. This is a totally new field I'm exploring. Do you guys have any pointers or tips as to where I should start??

Ive seen many others just ask for recommendations for a build on the AMD General Thread. Add things like what you'd like to do with the rig and maybe some kind of budget and see what others bring up. There's a lot of good people on OCN who enjoy helping and sharing when it comes to building a new rig. Check the thread out a bit and you'll probably come across a few, names like "help me with new build suggestions" tittles like that seem to work. It would give you some good suggestions from a broad info base. Myself I always stay with Asus, top quality, been around a very long time too, but don't just take my word for it, make a post and see for yourself!
