It was a matter of price, I got it for $800, it was really the only way I was going to get any sort of decent laptop... and now I'm paying for it.

I have tried his method about 3-4 times now, no dice still..

Thats pretty much your only option now.
They wont give him quote over phone call. What he needs to do and what asus cs will tell him is that once they receive unit and once their technician determine whats wrong he will email him with a quote about repair cost.
