Overclocked Radeon 6950 Crossfire - Testing and Benchmarks

Thread Starter
Hi All,

I've been overclocking my Radeon 6950 Crossfire setup and thought I would share my results so far. As of now I seem to be stable @ 975 with 1.3 volts. I haven't attempted to turn the volts down yet. I'm going to try and get more benchmark software as well. Suggestions are welcome.

The CPU is currently stock speed at 3.2 and has a TON of OC headroom. I'm expecting scores to possibly jump as I believe some of the benchmarks may be CPU bottlenecked. I plan to add these results later once GPU is confirmed stable.

I added 3 benchmarks from my 6950(6970 bios) towards the bottom and they have some interesting figures as well. Specifically you can view the difference between the 975 / 925 scores. The 925 scores higher with a 1425 memory clock versus the 950 with a 1250 memory clock.

I'm going to include the graphics drivers too because I think they are having a huge impact. Unfortunately I didn't do that much testing under the 1/26 drivers. But the reason why I went to the 6950 bios mod because it seemed to be very unstable at low clock speeds. I attributed this to the 6970 bios mod but it could have been the drivers. As many have pointed out the Radeon Cayman drivers are pretty new and possible unstable especially so with crossfire. On the bright side, and forward thinking, I'll have these numbers when a NEW patch comes out and will be able to compare then.

Setup:
2/15 Radeon Drivers.
Dual 6950 Radeon Sapphire reference. Bios mod 6950 shader unlock only.
Asus Crosshair IV Formula 16x 16x.
CPU Phenom II 1090T 3.2 (Stock speed)
MSI afterburner 2.1.0, voltage + speed unlock.

Thanks for the test. I'm looking to get a 2nd unlocked 6950 in the next couple months so this is some good information. smile.gif

Care to benchmark Crysis/Crysis Warhead on Very High/Enthusiast?

By the way, your core overclocks way better than mine. Mine didn't like 930 at 1.25v. Didn't want to push the voltage any higher without better cooling.

Sure. I'm downloading Crysis / Crysis Warhead from steam right now so I'll post the benchmarks tomorrow.

As for the the temp / voltage increase. The stock Radeon aircoolers work very well, they are just insanely loud. My fan step is 30% to 50C and then at 60C 70%. There is still an extra 30%. I have it step to 100% fan speed at 80C.

I generally run 50-60% fan speed when I've been gaming but wanted to do the 70% for the high end benchmarking.

I wouldn't worry about the voltage increase as long as you don't mind a little noise. At least for benchmarking, you can step it down to something more quieter.

Yeah, they are really loud above 40% fan speed. I just turn my case fans up, makes less noise and I've never seen it go above 67C at 40% speed with several ours of gaming.

Also, awesome thread. +rep

Thank you. smile.gif I'm going water cooling this week so it should help a lot. Except I realized that I have a really loud air conditioner like 10 feet from me. Whoops.

But seriously, I had to make this thread because it was almost impossible to find any OC Radeon 6950 threads. Google has 100 pages of "convert 6950 to 6970." Frustrating. Figured I'd help out :0

I also got a lot more plans too. As soon as GPU is stable and watercool CPU I'm going to update the GPU benchmarks for all the programs with CPU OC since some programs might be CPU blocked.

Finished Crysis/Crysis Warhead! I edited the original posts and included the benchmarks. If you want the original loops I can provide those too in addition to the summary.

Also added a few other updates. I had a couple benchmarks from the 6970 bios.

I'm really surprised that enabling 8xAA in Crysis/Crysis Warhead barely affected performance.

Me too. I have no idea why! I think it may have to do with the CPU / GPU bottleneck.
