Quick SLI question, 7950gt - Page 2

To answer your question, no only 256 will be useable. As far as the card, an 8800GT/9800GT can be had for less than $50. That would be better than SLI. Also if I remember correctly, 7950 scaling in SLI isnt that great. Could be wrong though.
EDIT: To clarify you will have 512 TOTAL memory (256 from each card).

SLI does use both card's cores and memory. However, the same data must be mirrored into the memory across both cards. Are you familiar with how RAID-1 (mirrored) works? Same idea.

Because of this mirroring, the card with the least amount of VRAM dictates how much capacity is available on both cards. And the mirroring of identical data means that the capacity is effectively halved.

So you'll have two 256MB cards, and the memory of both cards is 'used', so it's a total 512MB of vram. BUT ... each of the two cards must be filled with the SAME 256MB of data, so your 'effective' vram capacity will stay at 256MB.

I agree w/others ... not worth SLI'ing these two cards. A 7950 512MB card though isn't *that* terrible of a card. It'll run older DX9 games pretty well. Lots of good suggestions on this thread for better used cards. If you want something new, this is the best thing going on newegg ATM:

Great deal on a very solid performer. About equal to an 88/9800GT, which is about 2x as fast as a 7950GT 512MB.
