Oddball issue just got odder?

Please don't brush this post off. Post #9 explains in further detail. This isn't some "stupid beginner's" problem.

To give you a quick rundown: My Radeon 6970 (Diamond) wouldn't install drivers (except from the disc) on my 1155-socket build (listed below). I contacted AMD and Diamond and I ran through every possible way to force drivers to install, and nothing worked. They have since escalated my issue to their "expert representative" who hasn't gotten back to me yet.

Windows updates just notified me there's a "Radeon 6900 Series Update" which is listed as "optional". I download that update and all of a sudden my drivers are 11.2. This update just became available tonight.

I go "okay... what just happened... was Windows 7 not compatible with something, causing this problem? did this update just change something to do with windows 7?".

Nope. I tried sweeping my drivers, and reinstalling 11.2 drivers from AMD's website. Didn't work. So I go back to the Windows update and reinstall.

Apparently there's something messed up here that AMD obviously knows about, but won't admit. Particularly if Windows just came out with an update specifically titled "Radeon 6900 ...", that changed my drivers to 11.2 all of a sudden (yet somehow AMD has been talking to me via email saying they don't know why my issue is happening). This update just became available today, and is the only other method (other than installing from the disc) that works. Updating manually through Windows hardware manager won't even work (just this update does).

No no this isn't about service pack 1. It's about an updated called "Radeon 6900 Update" (or something along those lines, but with "6900" in it specifically).

My drivers won't update on any mode of Windows 7 (SP1, or no SP1, doesn't matter). They will only install from the disc, and from what this update just oddly did.

After going through the HELL that the 10.x series drivers were, I can say that 11.2 are the single most stable drivers I've used so far from AMD. They're equal to Nvidia as far as stability goes. Bout time too. Also note that the Service Pack for Windows 7 was there to fix the known issues for drivers that were created long since before the latest driver set.

There's no conspiracy.
Your driver wasn't up to date, Windows caught it and let you know.

My secondary rig has a driver update for ATI Technologies Inc. -Display-ATI Radeon 5800 series right now.
Why because I'm not on the latest driver.

When I manually tried installing 11.2 from 11.1a, it wouldn't install properly. It would always finish installing but the drivers wouldn't install correctly no matter what I tried.

So I just reverted back to 11.1a and Windows just updated it to 11.2. Everything seems fine from here on end.

What's wrong with letting windows update it?

Why because I'm not on the latest driver.
Then why, may I ask, did AMD escalate my issue to one of their "experts". I followed every single method you could think of to get these drivers to install, less compiling my own code. You name it, I did it. Many times over. I even reformatted over 4 different times to try to get things to work.

I tried installing 11.2, 11.1, 11.1a, 10.12, etc, etc. Nothing would work. The ONLY drivers that would install were 10.12 from the disc. It is the oddest thing (hence why the AMD representative said that my problem is strange and needs to be escalated).

So now the ONLY two methods which work are installing via that Windows update, or installing through the disc. Manually installing will not work: Driver sweeping won't fix anything, running in safe mode nope, reformatting and going fresh nope, installing manually through AMD's prescribed methods using the hardware manager & just installing the unpacked drivers nope, upgrading from one driver to another won't work, disabling firewall nope, disabling antivirus nope, the list goes on. I've tried these things and more. Believe me, none of them work.

So there is something weird going on when this Windows update which just appeared (and I ran through Windows update checkers before, this never popped up), and now it took me to 11.2 successfully. Prior to that, Windows would claim I had the most up-to-date drivers with 10.2 (and this wait only a matter of days ago), or it would claim that my device is not up to date but is not compatible with the automatically found drivers (it would randomly choose one of these two things).

My issue is odd. I don't want you to brush it off. I've already posted another thread which got spammed with people telling me I wasn't driver sweeping right, and the thread gets flooded with beginner's help, rather than taking me seriously. :-/

The bottom line: I have a problem, I'm experienced with computers and computer building, I've followed my own methods, additional searched methods, and AMD's suggested methods so far, and nothing has worked. Only two odd ways of installing the drivers have worked, and manually installing the drivers I wish to install will not work. This makes me feel very uneasy about my purchase. (BIOS is up to date, drivers are up to date, I could expand the list it goes on, but I assure you everything is up to date, including all applicable updates/downloads that are generally recommended for people with issues such as mine).

I hate sounding like the guy trying to explain how he's a big boy and should be taken seriously, but that's basically the rundown of the situation. Something is oddly messed up here.
