agreed. and most real life loads like games dont hold at one load level for very long, it changes. so it might hit 95% or 100% load on the PSU for a bit, but then it will drop. a quality PSU should be able to handle this for years.

gameboy has been speaking the truth

on that anandtech bench running furmark they used 724w at the wall

724*.80=579w DC current

so even running furmark, the system is only consuming 579w.

if you are folding or running intense games, the power draw will still not be as extreme as Furmak. a GOOD quality 600-650w PSU could handle this load and even some overclocking.

the HX650w would be a good PSU for 470SLI and a bit of OCing.

if you want to buy new, then i, again, agree with gameboy and get a quality 700-750w PSU. that will leave you some head room for OCing and peace of mind.

I can tell you from actual experience that it'll be just fine.

My sig rig draws exactly 600w at the wall with all THREE overclocked GPU's and the overclocked CPU going full blast.

the X650 is a great PSU im glad you posted, does give us a real example of what we are trying to say

a quality 600-650w unit can support GTX470 SLI

Well PSU's have maximum efficiency above 20% and below 80%, it goes without saying your PSU is generally going to be using more than 20% so people don't go around saying "make sure you are using more than 20%".

Basically if you have a PSU where you are using around 50%-80% then your getting the best efficiency out of it.

this still only varies by a couple percent... a quality PSU maybe gets 87% efficiency or so at 50-80% load. at 100% load, that PSU should still be getting 83 or 84% efficiency.

if you buy a solid, quality PSU you can virtually ignore all those little rumors and rules of the internet because the unit will be built to handle what it says it can handle, and more.
