What does a backplate do for the card?

I've noticed the EVGA SSC cards and on the 65nm GTX 2xx cards have a backplate on covering the PCB. What exactly does this do?

I assumed on the 65nm GTX 2xx cards it was too cool the RAM on the backside of the card, but is the same true for say the EVGA GTX 460 SSC? Does it increase chances of a higher OC or is it to just look cool?

Protect's it from ESD? So you can fully hold it without picking it up from the edge's?

Backplate adds support to very long cards so it won't sag.

it improves rigidity on all cards...

it lowers temps on the 4xx range card due to the thermal pad on the back..

i noticed a 4-6 Deg C Temp difference with my cards...

which helps quite a bit...

and it looks good...

also you don't have to worry about wires rubbing on the sharp parts of the PCB and shorting out

Does it help overclock higher? I assume it would if temps we're an issue.

Honestly whatever the reason I like it cause it looks cool too!
