Cannot overlock Q9550 at all

Thread Starter
Hi,

This is the first system I have attempted to overclock and after two weeks of researching and tinkering I have not been able to produce a single stable overclock on my system. I am at my wit's end and I can not find an answer to this. I am not aiming for much, 3.4 GHz would be nice. Actually anything would be nice.

My system specs are as follows (Most of these are about 3 years old):
Q9550 C1 Clock rate of 8.5 and FSB of 333
GA-X48-DQ6 (Bios is f6 - I cannot update this to a newer revision because 64 bit windows is not supported apparetly)
TWIN2X4096-8500C5DF G (running stock at 1066Mhz for about 3 years now)
GTX570
850W Thermaltake Toughpower PSU
Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit

The CPU is cooled with a Noctua NH-U9B SE2. From HWMonitor, the cores 0-1 sit at 38-45ish idle/load and 2-3 43-47ish idle/load. System temp hovers between 36 and 50 C. Temperature does not seem to be the problem.

I have run Memtest and it has passed three separate times.

I am testing the stability of the overclock using Intel Burn Test. Note that rather than producing an error, my system completely freezes (usually on the first pass) if it makes it that far.

Since the board and CPU are supposed to hit 400 very easily, I started by raising the FSB to 366. I relaxed the RAM timings from 5-5-5-15 to auto (5 -7 -7 -24), changed the system voltage control to auto since it is supposed to overestimate the necessary voltages. I also set the PCI Express frequency to 100. Other than that I disabled C1E. This attempt did not get further than the windows loading screen before the system froze. After rebooting, it made it a shorter way each time before freezing.

After loading the fail safes, I tried the smallest recommend increase I had read about (10 FSB increase). This booted properly but failed the intel burn test. Raising the voltages manually also failed, as did setting them to baseline (in case the PSU is not delivering enough power). The RAM is rated to run at about 2.1 and I have read that it shouldn't be raised above 2.2. The Vcore I set to run at 1.35, supposedly a good upper boundary. Might as well make sure of it.

Other than that, I even tried the overclocking program that came with the mobo drivers, but that led to blue screen of death.

So basically I have no idea what is going on.

Any help would be appreciated.

"GA-X48-DQ6 (Bios is f6 - I cannot update this to a newer revision because 64 bit windows is not supported apparetly)" - where did you saw this? bios shouldn't have anything to do with windows, maybe you confused Bios with drivers?

Your ram is currently set to run at what speed when the cpu is at stock? 1066? try to set it a little slower, like 800, or 667, with the same timings as 1066, 5-5-5-15 and 2.1V, and then OC the CPU. That will pt aside that might be RAM problem when Oceing.

X48 in my experience can't do the FSB speeds needed for overclocking 45nm chips.

Fill in your rig specs for your sig.

The first thing you should do is DECREASE your multiple to something like 6x, make your RAM 1:1 ratio with the FSB, and increase your FSB until it fails to boot. Then add a couple bumps of NB voltage (maybe to 1.36 or so) and see if it improves.

Come back and tell us what your max FSB is. I've seen X48s that can only do 435 FSB which is not going to be nearly enough to clock a 9550 properly.
