Velcro to mount HDDs in Chassis (not SSD)

Hi all,

I am interested in creating a silent system, and have been reading around for tips and suggestions on how to mount my HDDs in my case XClio A380BK. I have six 2 TB drives on this machine, and the hum and vibration is driving me batty.

I saw a Velcro mounting solution that seems easy to implement given the layout of this case. Basically, it involves running a strip of Velcro down the bays, and attaching some to the HDDs, in effect binding them to the bays. I bought some industrial strength Velcro, but before I take the step, I've started doubting the method - my main concerns are:-

a) would the drives be stable? Given that these are not SSDs.
b) Heat, would it melt the adhesive on the HDDs, causing them to slip. I don't know, nor can I find the heat index of the adhesive for industrial strength Velcro.
c) Would this do anything to lower the hum and drone of the drives?

Any insights would be highly appreciated.

Why not put it in a 5.25 bay with one of these:http://directron.com/525to35bracket.html

And yes you could use Velcro too.

Unfortunately the 5.25" bays won't hold all my six drives. I wish I could get rid of some of them, but that's for another day.

Enough Velcro will hold just about anything. That stuff is strong.

a) Your drives will be perfectly stable. Just use enough.
b) I would not worry about this.
c) It will dampen your drives against the chassis of the system.

Also make sure you clean the surface before application; you need to give the adhesive as much incentive to be stronger than the Velcro.

Hey thanks for the quick response. I will try this out this weekend. I do have a good large (nearly silent fan) cooling the HDDs, so I hope that the heat is truly never an issue. I probably should document the Velcro mount, seeing I haven't found many example builds where Velcro has been used. Mostly everyone uses elastic suspension.
