Meh, bought my 5770 hawk from someone through a classifieds website (just like craigslist, but it's for my area only) for $100, when it was still going for $180 everywhere. Still works to this day.

The only reason why I hate listing on CL is when you actual meet up, the person always wants it at a lower price at that moment. Or says he only has X amount on him. etc or conjures up some story about he's strapped for cash and if you could cut them a deal... :facepalm"

Although reasonably good numbers considering how much business is done on Craigslist, you can't blame the website. It's a matter of using common sense and taking simple pre-cautions..

That's why you always ask for 10-20% more than you actually want. Plus sometimes you make some extra if the person doesn't haggle!

I've sold a car, a motorcycle, and several other odds-and-ends through Craigslist and other than the aforementioned haggling have never had an issue.

I think most of the crime is probably people making poor choices on there. Never have the person come to your home (or if they do never let them in), never meet them in an empty parking lot/at night/in the ghetto/ by yourself.

What are you talking about I always meet up in an empty parking lot in the middle of the night. Especially in the ghetto. It's just the other person that never shows up!

Finally some sense...

I've bought and sold through craigslist, heck most of my furniture is from craigslist, and have never had problems. Sure, going with a friend is a good idea, but having an tidbit of common sense is the main requirement for successful shopping via classifieds, whether they're online or not.

Honestly though, the number of crimes is pretty low considering the interaction you get in craigslist sales. If craigslist is truly a "cesspool" of crime, I would expect a much larger number. This just seems like a silly alarmist article from a company trying to get its name out. ]

Just think about the lead in line: "Study reveals that anonymity within the Craigslist website is exploited by hundreds of criminals across the country." HUNDREDS! of criminals across the country! In a country of 330+ million! Oh noes! Crime is rampant on the site!

Only 330 crimes out of millions of adds and 300 million American people, some 60% of which have internet access.
That is a sad, sad figure. This is why Craigslist is one of the greatest markets ever for me - I find most people are honest with their deals.

Well, for those that read the article you would have noticed in the first sentence that the "study" was commissioned by Craigslist's direct competitor...of course they will be calling it a cesspool of crime.
