[Tom's]Who's Got Game? Twelve Sub-$200 CPUs Compared - Page 3

Bulldozer isn't until the first of May, right? Probably then I will have a good idea what my new platform will look like. This one is getting pretty "old".

A Sandy Bridge Pentium is a "threat"? That would be barely a threat to a cheezy Atom, and would only be passable for some ancient legacy applications. Something like this won't be a threat to progressive minded, advanced platforms like Bobcat and Bulldozer.

I'm not even sure why Intel plays these games. If Sandy Bridge was actually good - they'd bring it out as a real processor, not some slight reheat of some obsolete stuff, like the i7. But Pentium? They must be on the same dope Charlie Sheen is on...

Thought that's what I said Not many folks visiting benchmark articles(assuming, you know what that does) are going to be running their budg gear at stock. I mean really, they "simulated" a 550 by overclocking another chip I dunno, I'm just confused I guess, the general point to this thing is that locked 1155s out perform stock older budget chips?

Er, not sure if you realize this or not, but a PhII 955, 970, and a 1075t aren't exactly budget chips..

Price will drop further down later in the year when Buldozer is actually released.
Not due to the constant changes in sockets, it makes sense to invest in a good CPU as they are pretty future proof.

CPU overclocking has little effect on most titles anyway, without multiple GPUs.

No, but Toms aims their reviews at the enthusiast community who generally do OC and besides, much better? I wasn't aware anything apart from the Athlon IIs were anywhere near much different to the other CPUs in that review.

Price, not performance, sets whether a chip is budget, this is why a lot of people bought AMD, Intel between when they released the i5 750 and now has nothing to compete in the same price bracket, now its all more expensive or unoverclockable, or on a EoL socket.

Meh. Some of the results are nice, but I think we're gonna be hitting a wall with CPUs affecting games. Sure, the Sandy Bridge/Intel stuff pulls ahead in some areas, but overall it's nothing substantial.

Those are only a handful of games out there, and with most games AMD and Intel are pretty neck and neck. With all the CPUs coming out game developers aren't going to want to sit down and optimize every single game for specific architectures. They're more focused on getting the game to work on everything and out there to make money.

Seems lately as long as there's L3 Cache and clock speed, you're good to go.
