[Tom's]Who's Got Game? Twelve Sub-$200 CPUs Compared - Page 6

Thread Starter
I'm AMD user (NOT FANBOY) and somethings are clear here.

1- SB CAN overclock and if you can't do it, use Google and OCN, both are free. lol
2- Tom's takes the based price given by manufacturers and high end stores like newegg where the CPUs are more expensive that Microcenter.
3- Sure, we can overclock the AMD CPUs, but we ALSO can overclock SB.

My current rig isn't the best but gives me all that I need. I will wait for SB release and maybe build a rig, and when bulddozer comes out will keep both AMD and Intel and build a Bulldozer rig. Why? Because I like the easy way for update an AMD rig without change mobo.

And they are all AMD users.

There is always an excuse to why AMD performs poorly but when Intel doesn't perform, it's because AMD has a superior processor.
I've been saying Toms was biased since I had a Socket 775 system, they're horrid reviewers and (iirc anyway) were trying to make the Pentium 4 look decent compared to the Athlon64 half the time, plus, all the Intel ads on the site...Yeah.

I've seen firsthand the performance difference between Intel and AMD in SC2.
With that being said, it really isn't like AMD processors aren't capable of playable framerates in SC2 though.
Indeed, it's not necessarily the results that are biased, it's the way its written.

"3fps performance increase for going to SB? Lets not look at the benefits of going to the 1156 i3 or AMD, THEY WIN."

2. Read #1.

3. Its a comparison on what has already been released.

This review isn't biased, stop getting mad.
1) Wrong, going off newegg prices, AMDs x4 955 is $90 cheaper than a 2500k, all Intel has competing in that area is an unoverclockable SB for $10 less and a dual core on Socket 775, the performance difference in real life gaming is absolutely tiny between CPUs, I'd rather spent that extra $90 on my GPU, I'd gain more FPS than going to a 2500k.

Yes, the results aren't but the way it is written is, Toms was doing the exact same thing during the Pentium4 vs Athlon64 era, except AMD was owning Intel in every way in that era whereas in this era they only win in the budget area.

2) See above.

I didn't, I know at stock clocks there's a very small performance loss, it's just all the Intel users making 3-4 frames per second look massive.

1) Only the k edition chips can, Toms didn't use k edition chips and the chips in that price segment don't have a k edition.
3) Like I said, not those SBs...Not more than a tiny amount at least.

You can't overclock a non k edition SB because PCIe, USB, etc is all based off the one clock speed, if you raise that you raise the RAM speed, USB speed, PCIe speed, etc, hence why Intel sells multiplier unlocked K edition CPUs.

I hate to bring this thread back, but did anyone notice they're using a 3186mhz CPU to simulate a 3300mhz CPU?

Page 2, they're using a 3.1ghz i3 2100 to simulate a 3.3ghz i3 2120, they say their target CPU speed is 3200mhz and they achieved 3186.. but the i3 2120 has a clockspeed of 3300mhz?

How on earth can they get away with such shoddy stories?

Brutuz: The site's been covered in AMD CPU and GPU ads for the past few months, so not sure where you're going with that ad theory. Just because a site has an ad for one brand or another (or both in Tom's case) means nothing. There's plenty wrong with the article, but yeah. Not that.

AMD needs to slash the 1090T to $170. the drop to $199 isn't enough to entice people. the entire 6core lineup needs a drop imo.

Sandy Bridge cpus have destroyed AMD in just about every single aspect.

But in this case, it's like what? 3-5 fps? It's not like if you're a Phenom II X4 user, you should just upgrade to a locked i3 2100 anyway.

I'd wait for Bulldozer and Llano first.

Not on a semi-decent AMD processor. I run it on my desktop and get very good fps, getting well over 40 fps 95% of the time when overclocked. I can't remember exact figures right now, but it's not an awful figure, since I recon my 6850's limit is probably around there too.

Also:
The main reason I haven't and probably won't buy Sandy Bridge is because of the locked base clock. I was very tempted at first, but the only processor that I could afford at the time was an i5-2300. As there's no 2300k, it just didn't compare to the performance an overclocked Phenom II (or even an older i5) would have. Hell, I'd've rather taken a first generation i3 over it.

As such, in my preference list for performance (excluding i7's), the i5 2500k is above the 760, which is well above the 2500, which is about on par with any of the older dual core i3/5's.

AMD obviously isn't at the top in price/performance, but the inability to overclock Intel's most recent processors was just a complete killer for me. If I buy a budget processor, I expect to be able to overclock it to get reasonable performance out of it. You can't do that with sandy bridge processors, and unless Ivy Bridge lets you, I likely won't be buying Intel for a while. The -k processors just plain cost too much.

So, how does that explain all the "Our six or their four?" "AMD. Ready. Willing. and Stable." or all the AMD Radeon graphics ads that have been on their site, for, well, months now? Why would they be promoting Intel and criticizing AMD the way you're suggesting?

By your logic, wouldn't that be counter productive, since AMD has ads there and all.

So know one thinks it's odd they're simulating a 3300mhz cpu with a 3186mhz cpu? Simulating them at all is bad enough, but with that kind of clock difference, eh. So if they started benching with "2870mhz Phenom 955s" I should just ignore it.

Korlus: The "K" sandy's aren't overpriced. The 2500k is in the same market my 760 was in, and it was a fantastic buy. The numbers don't lie - on (stock) AMD chips, SC2 is horrible in comparison. Having said that, RTS is a more forgiving genre when it comes to lower frame rates.

Has anyone seen this bit:

That's the dumbest freaking test I've ever seen. RAR Compression in the middle of a game? If that's not attempting to make the results as biased as humanly possible (towards Intel of course), I don't know what is. On top of that, it's not even close to being a "real-world" test, since the biggest problem gamers would have is a scheduled antivirus run in the middle of gaming (if not that then just general bloatware in the background), and no CPU, no matter how great is gonna change the results of this test. And anyway, that's why you have the ability to end processes in OSs.
