[CB] It's Official: Retail PC Gaming Is Dying - Page 7

Retail bookstores are dying too, and you don't seem everyone crying that the sky is falling over that. What is it about PC gaming that gets everyone's panties in a bunch? Gaming is here to stay. As long as there are games and computers, there will be PC gaming.

Retail PC gaming is dying?

No, retail PC users are smart and don't waste $60 a pop every other day on a game that scored 4/10. Consoles are for kids.

90% of console games are crap.
You don't see that for PC's... most of the games are quality made or quality ports.
If not they are priced accordingly.

The GPU industry brought in billions last year, there are several PC games that are far superior on PC and this is widely known, not to mention WoW and SC2's dominance.

Also, Microsoft is re-launching PC gaming with Windows 8.

They can stick their GFWL where the sun don't shine. I don't care if DX11 is the last directx. They can keep their GFWL

Funny thing is that we keep hearing the reason devs keep leaving PC is all the pirating. Are they blind and deaf to what is happening on the 360 and PS3. Most of my buddies who have one or the other have modded consoles that play pirated versions of games.

I think the real reason we keeps seeing devs leave is its so much simpler and much more profitable to make a crappy console game. Look how many games we see released every month on one console alone compared to PC.

"Retail sales of PC games have been deteriorating for a number of reasons: Developers are producing fewer PC games because of the fear of piracy. Consumers have been migrating from PC games to those played on the current generation of consoles. Retailers do not make the same effort to market PC games, often relegating them to the backs of their stores. Last, the move to digital distribution of games makes downloading them directly to the PC an easier alternative to purchasing the games at retail."
I'd also add with the tremendous number of netbooks sold of the years and tablets taking off, it's only natural for there to be a decline in traditional PC gaming. Not much of a shocker really.

Add also that most pc games are backwards compatible thanks to patches, dos emulators, virtual consoles, glide wrappers etc.

While for every new console you have to scrap the games of the previous generation.

I do not buy many new games because there are tons of pc games I own and have not played yet.

If this is called progress in consoles then i prefer pc games. By owning a new console, i feel i am ripped of.

I'm sorry to say; I'm one of the statistics... I've recently moved to the Xbox 360 for my gaming needs. It has just been way to costly to keep up with hardware to play the next generation games... and Crysis 2 is a perfect example.. There are no minimum requirements for an XBOX 360; it just works every time all the time... Granted you don't get DX11 gaming, but who really cares... The game play is more important and how smooth it could be with a select types of video cards for a PC. Now don't get me wrong, PC blows the xbox away in graphics alone, but is it really worth the cost to play a $60 game? The answer is...not a chance in hell... I have bought my last PC graphics card... The GTX480... I will no longer be buying top dog cards, since I haven't used it to play a game in about 6 months... Its actually pretty sad to say, but Console gaming has evolved a great deal. And has finally made it past the point where the better value is in console gaming...

AGREED 100%!!! PC GAMING IS IN IT'S DEATH THROES! /sarcasm

While I think the platform has certainly diminished in the last four years, it's hardly dying. Everyone who said it is absolutely right, services like Steam and D2D probably account for enormous portions of sales for PC games now.

The piracy argument is a very interesting topic now. What started out as a scare tactic for lawyers, accountants, and PR guys, has now turned into a self fulfilling doomsday prophecy.
The real reason developers began to migrate to consoles was because of cheaper development and support costs. Piracy became a convenient excuse.

"Retail PC Market =/= Overall PC Market" <- This!

PC gaming certainly isn't dying.
I have been noticing that we keep getting shafted and get these horrid console ports lately. *cough* Black Ops *cough*

If consoles offered better hardware I'd certainly own one.
The only reason I would buy a console is to play with friends and not to worry about how many people in the server are using a wallhack. <- wallhacking has been rising rapidly through BFBC2

Pirating is a lame excuse to shaft PC players as the multi-player hardly ever works anyways so people end up buying the game.
As long as we have Blizzard and Steam PC gaming will stay along for a very long time and will continue to grow.
