Canon GL1

Thread Starter
Can anyone help me with my Canon GL1?

First off, I know there are two models of the GL1, right? The MK1 and the MK2? How can I tell which model I have?

Also, does anyone have any suggestions on how to set up my GL1? Like, play with the settings to make the footage nice looking.

Thanks for any help.

there is a gl1 and gl2 im not sure about mk1 mk2

as far as making the footage nice looking there is no option to have full manual control over settings because it is a high end consumer camera. also it has a fixed lens. nicer footage means nicer camera to put it bluntly. but honestly the better the lighting the better quality you can get, that camera does not perform amazing under low light conditions

Yeah, I was afraid of hearing that.

What about like white balance and simple stuff like that? Any tips?

And it has a focus ring thing on the front right before the lens. It turns, you know? I don't know what to do with it, or what it really is. I just thought it was for focus. Any idea what it is?

Edit: Also, does anyone suggest any MiniDV tapes in particular? Whatever you think is best.

white balance usually is ok in auto. normal lights are tungsten. fluorescent is fluorescent. and the sun is the sun. just to keep it simple.

the ring in the front is for focus. the camera has solid auto focus and with that camera its hard to force a shallow DOF other than zooming in all the way. you normally dont need to worry about focus because the camera is pretty much always in auto mode anyway.

as far as miniDV tapes go i only use panasonic. whatever you do stay away from the sony tapes they are bad and they will gunk up the heads in the camera

Oh ok cool, thanks. I didn't know that about Sony tapes.

Also, what if I've played with that focus thing? It makes the footage blurry. How could I put it back to its factory setting?

Also there is a switch on the back of the eye piece (to view footage through). It turns to the left and right. Do you know what it does? I just leave it in the middle but should I do something different?

Oh yeah, what "definition" does the GL1 record in? Like 360p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p?

Thanks, and sorry for all the questions. Trying to get educated.

You're a big help!

the thing on the eye piece is to adjust for people that wear glasses.

just put the camera in auto focus and it will take care of everything for you.

it records in 480p i believe just standard NTSC
