Onboard will sound better with good head phones. You wouldn't be using the AD700s to their full potential, fine. In the end though, you'll be glad you bought them, because when you decide to buy a sound card, you won't be stuck having to choose the Xonar DX over the STX with the excuse that your headphones aren't good enough.

LoL, wow just wow. The ignorance is overwhelming. Are you aware of the technical differences between onboard and discrete sound? (as in parts/components used) You know for a fact that discrete sound cards do not use cheap parts? Don't be so gullible.

Again, you know for a fact that onboard is inferior to discrete based on what factual findings? Please provide scientific and technical facts behind your reasoning.

Oh, btw that scoreboard screenshot is meaningless, at least cuad's screen shot actually has his name in it.
Have YOU experienced 21st century onboard sound? Do you even own a sound card? It really makes me wonder because I don't see how you can say on board holds a candle to a dedicated sound card.

The screen shot was a joke. You need to hop off your high horse because you're doing more damage to this forum than you are helping it.

The negativity you're exuding is astounding.

It was a joke. Just like you said it has nothing to do with sound cards or being able to hear someone. For all we know, who's to say your score wasn't received by half AFK noobs and boosted packages (honestly, I don't even know what game you're playing).

It's clearly not me, it was even posted on this very forum, so clearly it was a joke.

No one is jumping on the so called " onboard audio sucks" bandwagon. Onboard audio will never be as good as a addon card til they stop using cheap components. Using AD700 on onboard audio would be a waste of money. As the AD700s isnt gonna the way it suppose to. it be like me trying to use my AKGs on onboard audio.

I had to use onboard audio my self many times while waiting for sound cards to come.I in up having to use older audigy cards or a usb SB live 24bit I had laying around.

Azo simca is helping the op, the fact is onboard audio doesnt hold a candle to even the DS or the DG. The op would benfit from the sound card and the headphones, then trying to use headphones with onboard audio. in turn the headphones wouldnt sound that good because of that.

Op what simca suggest is what i also suggest, the JVC he mention are like the AD700s with simlair sound signature . I have used AD700s on onboard audio before when i was waiting a sound card to come and they do not sound good when using thru the onboard audio. so that be the worst thing you can do even tho you wouldnt as it past your budget.
He obviously understood everything I was saying.

You just said it. You won't be using them to their fullest potential. In fact, when I was using AD700s on on board, I felt like I was wearing any other pair of headphones honestly. I was not "wow'd" with the AD700s alone. It was only when I got my sound card that I was honestly "wow'd"

Do you have ears? Almost everyone on this forum has reported hearing a HUGE difference between on board sound and a dedicated sound card. The only reason on board would not be inferior to dedicated sound cards is if you're using optical out and even then on board SPDIF out usually has higher jitter than a sound card's would.

WHY DO YOU EVEN OWN AN ST IF A DEDICATED SOUND CARD IS NOT BETTER THAN ONBOARD. YOU'RE WASTING MONEY, BRO.

Wow is all I have to say to this.

Any audio set up is only as good as the source. And i dont just mean the sound card. I mean the file itself, sample rate, bit rate, directsound vs wasapi/asio, etc. Your not gonna provide a good test by listening to a 5 year old mp3 or a 480p youtube video.

I have been bouncing between onboard and dedicated cards for the past 3-4 years and can strongly agree that onboard sound is acceptable but doesn't hold up in clarity even as a passthrough to most dedicated cards. It might suffice for an average gamer, but I can't go back.

Heck even cs 1.6 pro heaton dropped bills for a pair of hd600s and sound card during his old competing days.

The only way I can use onboard is spdif out to an external dac/amp. The analog out is like guaranteed headache. Hate to say it but even with digital audio data, I believe a decent card makes a difference. If you start amping these onboard sources you can really notice the difference almost immediately.

Speaking of amps I can't wait for my matrix mstage to show up .

Sadly, the truth you believe and cling to makes you unavailable to hear anything new.

I'm surprised you actually take anything acoustic related seriously on this board. The last time I checked this is a Overclocking board, not Head-Fi/audiophile board.

plenty of RMAA measurements out there. Look them up.

On top of that, for gaming a sound card is highly important. While the DG isn't a great sound card, it's better than on board. You can barely hear footsteps in games without a sound card. With a sound card you can. You underestimate how important a sound card is for gaming.

It's actually more important for gaming than for music.

I'm aware of the RMAA results for various soundcards/DACs, but it's not something anyone would bet their house on, it is only a synthetic test to give the user a approximate idea.

All I was stating was it's a bit far fetched to totally disregard onboard (ALC889) and say it cannot hold it's own against a Xonar DG.

If that's ALL you were really saying, then I'm so upset that we've been debating this entire time.

While I do still think a simple DG is better than on board, it may not be worth it to some people. I think onboard can hold its own against a DG, but I don't think it'll hold up well when you get past the 50 dollar mark.

Be it AD2000B, AD1988B, ALC890, ALC889/A or whatever else.
