CPU bottlenecking my 2x 4870's?

Thread Starter
I just bought a 2nd 4870 to run in crossfire. My MB is a gigabyte ep45-ud3p and my CPU is an e5200 overclocked to 3.5ghz.

I'm not seeing a huge difference at all in performance with the second card installed. Is my CPU bottlenecking my cards? Thanks.

If you want to see some improvement in fps you'll need to get a larger monitor. A 19" can only support lower resolutions wich puts the load more towards the cpu rather then the gpu's.You will see the 4870 CF starts to shine at higher resolutions.

Ah cool beans. I had my eye on a 23" upgrade. Now how to explain to the wife that I need to spend another $150, hmm....

You'll see a performance increase if you buy and overclock a Q6600, Also you do not need a bigger screen, you need a screen with higher resolution, like 1650x1080
post #5 of 20
No, it is not.
First of all, "bottlenecking" is not about one hardware component holding back the others, its about the hardware holding up the software that the user is trying to use.
Second, if the second card added no benefits, are you sure the game wasn't running at the best it could, software wise? If things actually feel slow, then yes, I would say your processor is too slow. My guess is that a single graphics card was already more than enough for your games though.

Just for some perspective, my Opteron 170 (dual core) at 2.5GHz can play everything just fine, and it was manufactured in the early 2000s. For games, the graphics card is really what matters. Games like GTA4 run terribly, but that is because that specific game requires a lot of processor power. Despite me having a GTX 285, the processor is the weak link for that specific game.

So a better question would be, do you need a better processor? The answer is probably no, but if you want to squeeze every ounce of eye-candy and performance into your game playing, go ahead and upgrade.

So that being said does that mean that mean I could get better FPS @ 1920x1080 with a bigger monitor then my current resolution of 1440x900 in the same game?

What kind of connection are you using? VGA or DVI? What resolution? How are you measuring your results? Just visually? What game are you playing? Have you tried some various settings since you have more GPU power?

What kind of Hard Drive are you using?

Yep, you need a bigger monitor... 4870x2 really shines at 1080p... I'm talking from experience here

I'm connecting via DVI. I've got a 250 gb sata hardrive 7200rpm (not sure on specific model).

FPS wise the only thing I have actively checked so far is TeamFortress 2. Im getting 40-60 fps but it will dip below 30 when it gets busy.

I also ran the fist demo of 3dmark vantage as was getting low 20's for the first demo. I would have better numbers but I left it on last night and it crashed.

Are you overclocking your e5300?

I think it could be part of the problem, but since you need permission from the other half, tell her we said it is your cpu, monitor, ram, hard drive, and the lack of a ZR1 Vette.
