Ylod Please Help

Thread Starter
Ok last week I got the Ylod (Yellow light of death) while playing a game. This happened 2 times, the first time it just shut off and gave me the ylod for a little bit then 20 mins later i turned it back on. The second time I was playing Black ops for about 30 mins and it just shut off. The next day I try to turn it back on and its still stuck on the ylod. So I took it apart and looked for any signs of overheating. There was absolutely no signs or evidence that my ps3 overheated. So then I put it back together and check the hard drive by inserting it into my computer. The hard drive was fine. So I'm not sure whats wrong with my ps3 but I don't want to pay $150 for another ps3. I'm guessing that its the power supply but not for sure. MY ps3 is a old 80 gig. So if you you know or think you know what might be wrong with my ps3 please post.
Thanks

Similar thing happened to me just before the release of the slim ps3. My warranty just ran out on my 80gb but I rang Sony multiple times and kept demanding to speak to same kind of manager and just generally kicking up a stink. eventually they just offered me a refund.

Failing that there are plenty of tutorials floating about on Youtube and various forums.

This may help:

I basically followed those guides except in a written pdf file. The pdf file said to check for burn marks on the metal cover. But it didn't have any burn marks. There was no burn marks anywhere.

My PS3 has overheated twice now and given me a YLOD each time. It has absolutely no burn marks. What happens is that the solders holding the GPU and CPU get soft and then the chip becomes loose. There are no visible signs that it overheated.

Try reflowing it yourself since the warrenty is gone.

Also I would advise against plugging the PS3s HDD into the computer, I've heard stories where the PS3 doesn't accept the HDD anymore and you need to reformat it in order for it to work.

Thanks I actually tried using a simpler way yesterday that actually worked. I heated my ps3 up with a hair drier without opening it (didn't want to take the whole thing apart again). I watched a youtube video on how to to this. What it basically said is put a coat over the ps3 and have the back vents pointed out then blow the vents with a blow drier for 15 minutes and let it cool for 20 minutes after you do that. So far my ps3 is running fine and I'm not sure if it will actually last long but I'm hoping it will. But if/when i get the ylod again I'll try reflowing.
Thanks for the tips though
P.S. I did format my ps3 HDD on my computer before it started working and my ps3 just reformatted when i put it back in but I'll take that into mind and not reformat my HDD on my computer again.

Well today i was playing black ops with my friend and after about an hour and a half my ps3 started giving off a really weird smell I'm not sure if it smelled like thermal paste or something burning but it was really strong. I put new thermal paste in it when i took it apart so I'm guessing its just thermal paste.

My launch 60GB gave me YLOD last year while watching a DVD. In the meantime, I bought a slim but miss having the EE inside for backward compatability.

I'm on the waitlist with Gophermods for a reball, don't trust a temporary reflow.

It's not temporary anymore. Replace the power-supply after the reflow with an APS-231 power-supply and you're done.
