So yeah if you haven't heard the guys at MNPC Tech are doing a web show called Mod Men.

Me being a fan of shows like Monster Garage and American Chopper, I can see this being like the counterpart of those but for computer modding. It seems like a good show to put on like Discovery or the History Channel. I know I would watch it.

The tough part of putting a show like this on TV though is that it appeals to a strict demographic. It isn't just like general electronics or even just computers... but it is specifically about case modding. But I am not really a case modder myself, however I can still see me sitting down to watch this on a weekly basis. Although they may need some kind of gimmick to keep peoples attention in the show. To be honest I probably would have never watched American Chopper if it weren't for Paul Sr.'s temper tantrums and Mikey's silly antics.

Anyhow I am just curious how many of you would actually watch something like this if it were an actual TV show?

Tv generally makes good things go bad.

You must remember the general population is quite stupid thus requiring televised shows to be dumbed down to unbearable levels.

Yeah that is to be expected but what I want to know is considering that would you still watch it?

Like where would you draw the line... like you could have a boring straight forward "guide" style show where they just do the stuff and teach it to you. Then you have your more reality show base where it is more about all about the drama and stuff. Then everything else in between.

For me I would want a show like this to be more towards the instructional and informative standpoint but it wouldn't hurt to have some funny "shop moments" thrown in there to liven things up.

Well after seeing this thread I did just subscribe to the youtube channel so honestly that is good enough for me, but if it were televised then yeah I would probably watch it.

It would turn into pimp my ride for computers. No doubt the Xzibit meme would get beaten to death even more than it already is.

^^

I agree,

1.the show wont be as fun as it is now for the obvious reasons op on the first post stated.

2. it will run out of ideas soon enough, and then will turn into a ricer fest.

Hey guys! Just want to make a quick introduction as the executive producer of MOD MEN. Mnpctech and I have been collaborating on this for over a year now, and the original goal was indeed a TV show - a la American Chopper, or any number of car shows you may see. Though a potential web series was always in the back of our heads.

I pitched it around to a few places, and as the OP suggests the topic matter is/was viewed as niche - which in TV parlance is not usually a good thing. In some ways they are right, and this isn't going to be the next American Idol - but I do think the audience is broader than thought, particularly when you consider the international audience.

And I agree with the OP - even if you're not a modder in the MOD MEN sense, the show could still be of interest to you. Heck, I am basically an "Apple Guy" and have never built a PC from scratch - but I was interested enough to pursue, help develop, and fund this web series. I am betting there's more like me out there.

Going to a web format has been a really fun experiment, and we are still considering TV as a possibility. And I do agree that doing a TV show would complicate things and poses it's own set of risks. But that's what life is all about right?!?

In the meantime if you think MOD MEN "deserves" to be on TV the best thing you can do is to spread the word. Either way we hope we can inform and entertain all you folks!

I would absolutely watch it if I saw it on tv. But I don't watch much "live" tv anymore. Instead, I'd watch it on Hulu.com or something. I personally think a wider audience could be reached through other sites if it's possible. I don't subscribe to many channels on YouTube (in fact, just a couple at the moment). I just watch what other people posts on Facebook or OCN.

I don't see any networks picking it up because of the demographic. Other shows are successful because of the DRAMA they bring in which I don't really want to see on Mod Men show. I stopped watching the other ones when there was a lot of bickering with each other happening. It interests other people but a bore to me.

I think a good model for a MOD MEN TV show would be akin to something you see on PowerBlock TV - shows that are basically hosted by car guys with none of the petty drama, but lots of pretty cool projects to watch. I don't think these shows are rating juggernauts and they're not prime time material, but there's still a place for them.

Or something like Mythbusters, which is more irreverent and comedic, but still good viewing. And we all know the MOD MEN have a sense of humor!

Of course none of that addresses the perceived "niche-ness" of the demographic, but the reality may pleasantly surprise.

Anyway, a purely online format may indeed be the best place for this show and that would totally be fine by me...

it would belong on G4tv i think, but it would definitely turn out eventually as previously stated, like PMR.. xibit, yada yada yada
