So - Going out on a limb here and assuming you have tried this:

Lower the resolution on your LCD/Monitor that does work with your 5870, say to 1280x1024 or 1024x768; then unplug it and try hot plugging your CRT into it with Windows 7 up and running.

Bummer on not very many responses, I feel for you.

Definitely weird. And switching adapters/cables isn't working so something is off somewhere. I'll keep it in my mind and see if I come up with an epiphany.

Are you sure the cable supports DVI-A and is not a DVI-D?
